He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.

In the first forty days a boy had been with him.

But after forty days without a fish the boy's parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky,

and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week.
孩子在父母的命令下鸠珠，轉(zhuǎn)到了另外一條船上捕魚巍耗，不出一個(gè)星期，就捕到了三條大魚渐排。
It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty,
然而炬太，孩子看見老人日復(fù)一日劃著空蕩蕩的小船回來，心里非常難過飞盆，
and he always went down to help him carry either the coiled lines or the gaff and harpoon and the sail that was furled around the mast.
他總會走下岸去娄琉，幫老人拿卷起的繩索，魚鉤吓歇，魚叉孽水，以及繞在桅桿上的帆。
The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat.

The old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck.

The brown blotches of the benevolent skin cancer the sun brings from its reflection on the tropic sea were on his cheeks.

The blotches ran well down the sides of his face and his hands had the deep-creased scars from handling heavy fish on the cords.

But none of these scars were fresh.
這些傷疤中沒有一塊是新的霎肯。
They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert.
它們就如同一個(gè)了無生機(jī)的沙漠所經(jīng)歷過的侵蝕那樣久遠(yuǎn)擎颖。
Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.
老人是如此的蒼老，唯有雙眼依舊如海水一樣湛藍(lán)观游，充滿了歡愉搂捧，毫不沮喪。
"Santiago," the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from where the skiff was hauled up.
“圣地亞哥懂缕，”他倆從系船的地方爬上岸時(shí)允跑，孩子對他說。
"I could go with you again. We've made some money."
“我又能跟你一道下海啦搪柑。我家里已經(jīng)攢了一些錢聋丝。”
The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him.
老人曾經(jīng)教導(dǎo)孩子如何捕魚拌屏，而孩子也很敬愛這位老人潮针。
"No," the old man said. "You're with a lucky boat. Stay with them."
“不，”老人說倚喂。“你現(xiàn)在跟上的是一條幸運(yùn)的船瓣戚，應(yīng)該好好待在那兒端圈。”
"But remember how you went eighty-seven days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks."
“但是你可記得子库，你是怎樣接連八十七天一條魚也沒捉到舱权，然后又是怎樣接連三個(gè)星期每天都捉到大魚的嗎？”
"I remember," the old man said. "I know you did not leave me because you doubted."
“我記得仑嗅，”老人說宴倍。“而且我也知道仓技，你并不是因?yàn)閷ξ沂バ判亩x棄我鸵贬。”
"It was papa made me leave. I am a boy and I must obey him."
“爸爸叫我離開你脖捻。我是個(gè)孩子阔逼，不能不聽他的話〉鼐冢”
"I know," the old man said. "It is quite normal."
“我知道嗜浮，”老人說羡亩。“這是合情合理的危融∥访”
"He hasn't much faith."
“他太沒有信心了〖辏”
"No," the old man said. "But we have. Haven't we?"
“是的及志，”老人說≌唬“可是我們有速侈。你說是不是？”
'Yes," the boy said. "Can I offer you a beer on the Terrace and then we'll take the stuff home."
“是的迫卢，”孩子說倚搬。“我請您在海濱酒店喝一瓶啤酒乾蛤，然后我們把打魚的東西帶回家去每界，好嗎？”
"Why not?" the old man said. "Between fishermen."
“為什么不好家卖？”老人說眨层。“打魚的都是一家人啊上荡∨坑＃”
They sat on the Terrace and many of the fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry.
他倆坐在海濱酒店，許多漁夫拿老人開玩笑酪捡，老人一點(diǎn)也不生氣叁征。
Others, of the older fishermen, looked at him and were sad.
其它一些年紀(jì)較長的漁夫只是看著他，為他難過逛薇。
But they did not show it and they spoke politely about the current and the depths they had drifted their lines at and the steady good weather and of what they had seen.
不過他們并沒有把這份同情表露出來捺疼，只是很禮貌地談?wù)撝髑闆r、魚線所垂釣的深度永罚、穩(wěn)定的好天氣啤呼，以及在海上的所見所聞。
The successful fishermen of that day were already in and had butchered their marlin out and carried them laid full length across two planks,
當(dāng)天有收獲的幾個(gè)漁夫都已經(jīng)回來了呢袱，他們將捕到的馬林魚剖開官扣，攤平放在兩塊木板上，
with two men staggering at the end of each plank, to the fish house where they waited for the ice truck to carry them to the market in Havana.
一人抬著一頭产捞，兩個(gè)人搖搖晃晃地走到制魚場里醇锚，在那兒等著冷凍車來把魚運(yùn)到哈瓦那的市場上去。
Those who had caught sharks had taken them to the shark factory on the other side of the cove where they were hoisted on a block and tackle,
捕到鯊魚的人們，也已經(jīng)把鯊魚扛到海灣另一邊的鯊魚腌制廠去了焊唬，在那兒恋昼，鯊魚被吊在帶鉤的滑車上，
their livers removed, their fins cut off and their hides skinned out and their flesh cut into strips for salting.
然后被取下肝赶促，割去鰭液肌，剝下皮，肉也被切成一片一片準(zhǔn)備腌制鸥滨。
When the wind was in the east a smell came across the harbor from the shark factory;
每當(dāng)東風(fēng)吹起嗦哆，鯊魚腌制廠的魚腥味便飄過海灣吹過來；
but today there was only the faint edge of the odor because the wind had backed into the north and then dropped off and it was pleasant and sunny on the Terrace.
但是今天只能聞到淡淡的氣息婿滓，因?yàn)轱L(fēng)已經(jīng)往北方刮去老速，且逐漸平息，陽光照著海濱酒店凸主，天氣十分宜人橘券。
