When Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in 1945, a young soldier stood in front of the White House remembering(緬懷) his president. “I felt as if I knew him. I felt as if he knew me – and I felt as if he liked me.” He was saying what so many Americans were feeling.
FDR, as he was called, had been president since 1933(過去完成時(shí)). He was elected four times, serving for twelve years. This was longer than any other president(單數(shù)) before or since.(看上去是比較級(jí)肾请,實(shí)際是最高級(jí))二戰(zhàn)后確立美國總統(tǒng)只能做兩屆隔显,羅斯福是特例饵逐。
When Franklin took office(就職), there were lots of problems waiting for him(現(xiàn)在分詞后置做problem的定語). Banks were failing(關(guān)門). People were out of work. Many(代詞掷豺,很多人) had lost their homes. This was the Great Depression.
