My old friend, Harrison, had lived in the Mediterranean for many years before he returned to England. He had often dreamed of retiring in England and had planned to settle down in the country. He had no sooner returned than he bought a house and went to live there. Almost immediately he began to complain about the weather, for even though it was still summer, it rained continually and it was often bitterly cold. After so many years of sunshine, Harrison got a shock. He acted as if he had never lived in England before. In the end, it was more than he could bear. He had hardly had time to settle down when he sold the house and left the country. The dream he had had for so many years ended there. Harrison had thought of everything except the weather.

hardly when 和no sooner than 的用法
這兩個短語都有“一……就”栖茉、“剛剛……就”的意思，它們的意思非常相近，因此有時可以互換庞萍。例如：
“我剛到公共汽車站，汽車就開了佑刷±蚯埽”一句，就可以有如下幾句譯法：
Hardly had I got to the bus stop when the bus started.
No sooner had I got to the bus stop than the bus started.
但他們之間也有一些差異瘫絮，例如涨冀，如果從兩件事情的間隔時間來說，no sooner...than 居中麦萤，hardly...when 間隔時間最短鹿鳖。其它的一些區(qū)別見下面，請大家在運用的時候要留意壮莹。
no sooner…than它的意思相當(dāng)于“剛做完A這件事翅帜，就做B這件事”。例如：
He had no sooner returned than he bought a house.
他一回來就買了一套房子命满。
如果no sooner 位于句首涝滴，主句要用倒裝結(jié)構(gòu)。例如：
No sooner had he arrived than he went away again.
他剛到就又走了胶台。
No sooner had the game started than it began to rain heavily.
運動會剛開始歼疮，天就下起了大雨。
有一點要注意诈唬，no sooner…than 一般用來描述做過的事情韩脏，它不能用于表示將來的事。
hardly…when...
它的意思是“幾乎未來得及做完A這件事铸磅，緊接著就開始B這件事赡矢。”
使用這個短語時愚屁，一般用于過去完成時济竹；并且when有時可改用before。例如：
He had hardly finished the article when the light went out.
他剛寫完文霎槐，燈就熄了送浊。
He had hardly had time to settle down when he sold the house.
他還未安頓下來，就賣掉了那所房子丘跌。
另外袭景，如果把hardly放于句首，主句要用倒裝結(jié)構(gòu)即謂語動詞要提前闭树。如：
Hardly had I finished eating when he came in.

請區(qū)別一下no sooner…than 和hardly…when的用法
與這兩個用法的意思相近的還有as soon as与殃，一起來區(qū)分！這三個短語都可表示"一…就"，"剛剛…就"幅疼，有時可互換米奸，但用法不盡相同。
- 從兩件事間隔的時間看爽篷，as soon as 最長悴晰，"A事發(fā)生后，就做B事"逐工；no sooner...than 次之铡溪，"剛做完A事，就做B事"泪喊；hardly...when最短棕硫，"幾乎未來得及做完A事，緊接著就做B事"窘俺。
- as soon as較常用饲帅，在句中的位置很靈活。
當(dāng)no sooner…than的no sooner位于句首時及hardly…when…的hardly放在句首時瘤泪，主句要用倒裝結(jié)構(gòu)。 - as soon as可用于各種時態(tài)育八；而在no sooner...than...和hardly…when…句型中对途，主句一般要用過去完成時，than或when后面的從句常用一般過去時髓棋。
