1. What does LIULI mean?
LIULI is the ancient Chinese word for glass or glass art. We have used the word since the founding of LIULIGONGFANG in 1987 in reference to all of our sculptures and art works. This usage has led to the widespread application of the word when referring to modern Chinese crystal in both written and spoken Chinese.
2. How is LIULI or crystal made?
It is formed when silica is exposed to extreme heat of 1400 degree Celsius. The crystal clear end product is what we call LIULI.
3. What is Pate-de-verre Technique?
Pate-de-verre is one of many techniques used in creating Liuli art. The process involves casting a wax sculpture in plaster, melting out that wax and adding glass ingredients to the leftover negative space. The advantage of this technique is the potential for incredible detail. Experimentation in pate-de-verre is constantly expanding the creative realm of Liuli.
4. How’s LIULIGONGFANG started?
Founded by liuli artists Loretta H. Yang and Chang Yi, LIULI CHINA MUSEUM is Asia’s first all-encompassing liuli art museum. It is a unique visual arts retreat, a facility for research and knowledge and a sensory habitat that embraces the beauty of liuli art.
5. What does the museum store in terms of pieces?
The museum holds over 260 pieces of liuli artifacts, some of which date back to the Warring States period. The contemporary collection includes works from renowned international and local artists. Among them is Loretta H. Yang’s pièce de resistance Guanyin of a Thousand Eyes and Arms, a large scale Buddhist sculpture inspired by a turn of the century mural from the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang.
6. Does LIULI havedifferent branches abroad?
Today, LIULI has 41 galleries worldwide, and Loretta’s and Chang Yi’s artworks are collected at more than 35 museums around the world. These include the Victoria and Albert museum in London, the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C., and the Bowers Museum in Orange County.
