intermediate
As the result of terrible misrule the government had fallen into the hands of eunuchs; and the scholars rebelled against the rule of the intermediate sex.
intermediate這個(gè)詞在之前共讀單詞書的時(shí)候封面上有：
“the intermediate sex”則讓我聯(lián)想到Eric在推送中對(duì)“The Gay Genius”中“gay”一詞的探討：
fair
The young child entered school at the age of six. It was a fair-sized school with over a hundred pupils, all of whom studied under a Taoist priest.
fair在朗文當(dāng)代中“a fair size/amount/number/bit/distance etc”的用法是especially British English运怖。
朗文搭配中還指出可以用good和nice表達(dá)相同的意思：a good/fair/nice size (=fairly big)
first love
Tungpo, however, had a younger cousin-sister, who was his first love, and for whom he showed very tender feelings till the end of his days.
這里first love應(yīng)該是初戀的意思，它還有最愛的意思，比如牛津七中的例句：
- I like most sports but tennis is my first love. 大多數(shù)運(yùn)動(dòng)我都喜歡，而網(wǎng)球是我的第一愛好岩齿。
另外love有一個(gè)“零分”的意思：
- She won the first set six–love/six games to love. 她以六比零贏了第一盤攻人。
- love all (ie neither player or pair has scored) 零比零
看到詞組love is blind：when you love sb, you cannot see their faults 愛情是盲目的，愛讓人蒙蔽雙眼（指戀愛中的人看不到對(duì)方缺點(diǎn)）
想起英文歌《Love is color-blind》：
本章極力寫了蘇東坡的懂事"Mother, if I grow up to be a Fan Pang, will you permit it?"敞峭，聰明“The brilliant young mind quickly distinguished itself”攻柠，早慧“If we believe the records, he is supposed to have penned some extraordinary lines at the age of ten. ”球订，最后順帶寫了一件蘇洵軼聞，也對(duì)蘇軾有隱約的影響：
The challenge to the powerful clan and the tone of the public denunciation show in the father something of the impetuosity and intolerance of evil that were characteristics of the poet in his later career.
這樣枝枝蔓蔓的寫法瑰钮，不顯瑣碎反而趣味橫生冒滩。有點(diǎn)兒古文當(dāng)中信手拈來點(diǎn)到即止意味。
陳太丘與友期行飞涂，期日中，過中不至祈搜，太丘舍去较店，去后乃至。元方時(shí)年七歲容燕，門外戲梁呈。客問元方：“尊君在不蘸秘？”答曰：“待君久不至官卡，已去〈茁玻”友人便怒：“非人哉寻咒！與人期行，相委而去颈嚼∶兀”元方曰：“君與家君期日中。日中不至，則是無信叫挟；對(duì)子罵父艰匙，則是無禮∧遥”友人慚员凝，下車引之，元方入門不顧奋献。

想來林語堂本人也是古文功底了得健霹，有春秋筆法的味道。
