The Portrait of Sappho is a Roman parietal fresco from Pompei now housed at the Archaeological Museum of Naples. It depicts the bust of a girl with four waxed tablets in her left hand and a stylus in her right, while she half-close her lips in a thoughtful way, as if she was thinking before writing. Her face is serene, her eyes are brown and large, her hair is held by a golden net from which soft curls fall on the forehead and on the sides. The attribution to the famous Greek poet Sappho is fictional as the picture is not a personal portrait but a generic portrait intended to emphasize the family who exhibited it as an educated and wealthy one.
