1 - 閱讀感悟
(1)關于讀書會。
讀書會很讓我驚喜坞古,這并非是奉承奉承老師备韧,而是要夸夸我們的同學。一千個人就會有一千種看法痪枫,在設定標準答案的應試教育下织堂,我們對此的體會應該都不深。但因為讀書會要求看別人的筆記奶陈,所以我看到易阳,同樣評論一段話,觀點可能南轅北轍吃粒,無所謂對錯潦俺,都是與作者交流中迸發(fā)出的火花,很精彩。
比如關于蘇東坡考試時杜撰的那段話:
The judges read the story, but dared not question it, because it amounted to their admitting not having read its omewhere in one of the obscure ancient texts.So SuTungpo was passed.
?... ...
“Well that was what the sage emperor would have done,wasn't he?”replied Su Tungpo.
讀這段時黑竞,我當時的remarks是How lucky he is! But it's totally make sense if you heard about the story -?the Emperor's New Clothes. And Su Tungpo may get caught if he take exams nowadays as the internet will help the judges.
同樣的一段話捕发,有人想到了聯(lián)機學習者,看到了蘇東坡透過現(xiàn)象看本質很魂,抓住賢君講話的套路扎酷,所以才能把考官給糊弄過去。
(2)關于翻譯遏匆。
于我而言法挨,古文和英文學得都是半斤八兩。而林語堂確實精通古文和英文的學者幅聘,所以在讀林語堂寫的英文原著凡纳,既學習了英文,翻過來也學習了古文帝蒿。例如Chapter 6中林語堂翻譯蘇東坡的詩:
人生到處知何似荐糜,應似飛鴻踏雪泥。
泥上偶然留趾爪葛超,鴻飛那復計東西暴氏。
"To what can human life be likened?
Perhaps to a wild goose's footprint on snow;
The claws' imprint is accidentally left,
But carefree, the bird flies east and west."
一方面,林語堂的翻譯反映了他對詩歌的理解绣张,反過來幫助我理解了詩答渔。另一方面,林語堂的翻譯也讓我看到了詩歌翻譯的局限性侥涵,“雪泥”——“泥上”——“東西”沼撕,這種詩詞的韻律美是很難用英文表達出來,這也是為何詩歌那么美芜飘,卻無法稱霸全球务豺。
同理,要讀懂英文原著的美燃箭,也得從原文入手冲呢。比如林語堂在preface中寫的“Once at a great court ceremony, in the presence of all the high officials, he made fun of a certain puritanical neo-Confucianist and stung him with a phrase which made the victim smart, and for which he suffered the consequences.”中的sting和smart。
還有Chapter 5里面“Naturally, these regions were uninhabited and uninhabitable.”里面的uninhabited和uninhabitable招狸。
此外敬拓,林語堂在寫中國地名的時候用的時威妥瑪拼音(Wade-Giles romanization),不是漢語拼音裙戏。比如四川譯成是Szechuen乘凸,所以看到原著里的譯名時,要繞個圈才能反應過來累榜。
(3)關于生詞营勤。
由于閱讀量不小灵嫌,所以這次讀原著時,我改掉了逐個查生詞的習慣(因為沒時間)葛作。但這也讓我把精力集中到了個別自己覺得重要的單詞上寿羞,看別人筆記也補充了很多詞匯。單詞學習因人而異赂蠢,在此就不整理贅述了绪穆。
分享一個讀原著的生詞學習方法給大家。讀原著時虱岂,第一遍看到生詞時玖院,不要馬上查字典,第岖,而是根據(jù)上下文猜這個詞的意思难菌。做好標注后,繼續(xù)閱讀蔑滓,等閱讀完之后郊酒,再集中查生詞意思,既能回顧而且省時键袱。而且猜詞義再核對猎塞,印象深刻。
(4)關于英文寫作與原著賞析杠纵。
“這是林語堂用中文寫的還是用英文寫的?”起初钩骇,很多人都會有過這樣的疑惑比藻。因為林語堂這個中國人的英文寫作實在是太地道。比如“Young Mrs. Su Tungpo was by position and aged the senior”倘屹,如果是我银亲,相同的意思我可能會表達成“Young Mrs. Su Tungpo was older than her and possessed a higher position.”,高下立判纽匙。而且林語堂在描寫蘇東坡的風格地位時务蝠,熟練列舉了中英文的詩人做比較,簡直比外國人還專業(yè)烛缔。
閱讀過程中馏段,關于閱讀這回事也有所領悟。一直都想讀《How to Read A Book》這本書践瓷,在閱讀過程中發(fā)現(xiàn)老師分享了這本書的一些閱讀指導院喜,很受用,明年一定要好好拜讀下晕翠。
2-Summary
The first week's reading covers all chapters in the childhood and youth part and a chapter in the early manhood part.In these chapters, Su Tungpo’s family and living environment are detailed, as well as several things that influence Su Tungpo’s exams and career.
Su Tungpo was born in a well-to-do family. His personality and capacity for wine was inherited from his grandpa. His father was talented and made a good example of writing simplicity. With his father and brother, Su Tungpo set out for the capital for the examinations and official ambition.Within lines, I know that Su Tungpo is much talented than I’ve ever known. School textbooks reveal little about his great personality and his life喷舀,which I think is the basis of being an excellent poet.?
As a new bird, my first week’s reading is not easy for me because of bunches of new words and lack of background information. But it feels great to insist reading and do some writing day by day.
