第十二章：
內容提要：
Brookfield 來了新校長，Chips很喜歡他允华。但是來年后，Chips患了支氣管炎更米，休息半年后爬舰，65歲的Chips退休了，在學期結束的晚宴上屁药，他發(fā)做了離職演講粥血，回憶起之前的種種，用詞當然還是那么幽默酿箭，引得大家哄堂大笑复亏，還說他要寫一本名叫《罰打罰抄回憶錄（Memories of Rod and Lines）》的書。雖然退休了缭嫡，但是他仍然和學校保持著密切的聯(lián)系缔御。
語言點：

institution這個詞，通常見到的意思是“機構”妇蛀，但是這里是“由來已久的風俗習慣”的意思耕突，指Chips是Brookfield傳統(tǒng)的化身笤成。例：the institution of marriage 婚姻制度
After all it was a good, ripe age; and Ralston's straight words had, in same ways, had an effect. He felt that it would not be fair to hang on if he could not decently do his job. Besides, he would not sever himself completely.?
ripe age?成熟的年齡，立里有一篇文章眷茁，寫得很好從Good-bye, Mr.Chips 里學習如何表達“成熟”
have an effect炕泳，說明Ralston說的話，Chips往心里去了上祈，take sth to heart?
讓我想到電視劇里面經常出現“Don't take it personally.” 也是“別往心里去培遵，別覺得是針對你〉谴蹋”可以一起記籽腕。
hang on 堅持不放棄，在這里是有種“死皮賴臉不走”的意味纸俭。
decent這個詞节仿，除了有“體面的”的意思，還有“像樣的掉蔬，相當不錯的”的意思廊宪、
比如：a decent meal
sever這個詞，比較正式女轿，我們日常一般用cut off就可以了箭启。注意不要跟severe搞混了。

ripe雖然知道發(fā)音攘宙，但是經常一不小心讀成rape屯耸。。這就有點尷尬了
sever/sev?/ 不要跟severe混了蹭劈。
occasional 注意s是發(fā)濁音疗绣，規(guī)律是-sion在元音后面的發(fā)濁音，比如decision铺韧，persuasion多矮，-ssion發(fā)清音，比如expression哈打。
這里聯(lián)想到昨天的question塔逃，-tion在s后面發(fā)音為/t?/讯壶，比如suggestion。

內容提要：
第一次世界大戰(zhàn)爆發(fā)了患雏，Brookfield的師生紛紛入伍鹏溯。那些在戰(zhàn)爭中身亡的人罢维，對Chips來說淹仑，并不是一個個名字而已，都是一張張鮮活的臉肺孵。而Chatteris因為患糖尿病匀借，不能入伍，被大家看成是懦夫平窘。另外來自各方面的其他壓力吓肋，讓他幾近崩潰，所以他請求Chips重新回到Brookfield. Chips答應了瑰艘。
語言點：

用來修飾wrong的詞可以學習一下是鬼，不要只會用completely和totally啦。dreadfully/terribly/seriously/disastrously/horribly/tragically?
But one didn't guess what lay ahead.
“誰也想不到之后會發(fā)生什么紫新【郏” lay ahead這個用法很簡潔，要是我說的話

這里的should又是竟然的意思芒率。復習一下囤耳。

over這個前綴很好用，比如東西燒老了偶芍，可以說overcooked充择，飛機總是超賣，可以說overbooked匪蟀，睡過頭了椎麦，可以說oversleep.

I don't see why，"我認為也沒有必要... "很地道的表達材彪，可以用來替換我們常說的I don't think it necessary to...

昨天學的slack铃剔，今天就來slacker啦！
‘I do sympathize with you,’ Chips said.
sympathize是動詞查刻，后面加with再加sb
如果是sympathy的話键兜，是feel sympathy for sb
這句可以改寫成I do feel sympathy for you.
查字典的時候，發(fā)現sympathize還有“贊同穗泵、支持”的意思
例如：I entirely sympathize with this view.?對這個觀點我完全同意
... if you felt equal to it and would care to-- how about coming back here for a while? You look pretty fit, and of course, you know all the ropes.
equal to sth能勝任普气，能應付，一種正式的用法佃延。
I hope that he proves equal to the challenge. 我希望他能應對這一挑戰(zhàn)现诀。

to bits 成為碎片夷磕，變成小塊

hysterical/h??ster?kl/绵跷，名詞hysteria/h??st??ri?/，歇斯底里成福，這個詞很有意思碾局，我曾經一度以為這是個中國的成語，就像“聲嘶力竭”的感覺奴艾，但其實净当，這是個外來詞哈哈！這兩個詞元音不同蕴潦，需要注意一下像啼。
