Today is Tuesday.
It was a holiday that Gertie didn't know what holiday it was. Mama told her that it was the Forth of July, the Independence Day of America. Papa carefully put the national flag on a flag pole and carried it into the front room so it could be displayed from a window overlooking the street. Gertie and Chalotte looked outside the window and noticed that almost all the neighbors, up and down the street, hung out their flags too. Ella was grating potatoes for kugel. She did it for so long that she just wanted to take a break, but when she heard that Charlie was going to come and have dinner with the family, she didn't feel tired any longer. She knew that Charlie loved to eat kugel so much that she would like to prepare for him as soon as possible. She had finished so quickly that she still had had a short time to unbraid her hair and brush it shiny and tied the front ends back with a pink bow, which made her looked much more like a grown-up, before Charlie knocked at the door.
