1924年12月27日，出生于廣東開(kāi)平水口泮村拨扶。家住廣州西關(guān)凳鬓，常隨母親到戲院看戲，回來(lái)在家中仿效演唱患民。1938年因日軍侵華而失學(xué)缩举，同年7、8月間，隨母親經(jīng)澳門(mén)赴香港仅孩，拜舅母何芙蓮為師托猩，正式學(xué)藝，取藝名小燕紅辽慕。1939年春節(jié)京腥，在勝壽年班首次登臺(tái)演出。從此溅蛉，她在戲班中練功公浪、學(xué)唱，夜場(chǎng)演出扮丫環(huán)船侧、宮女的角色欠气。在香港郊區(qū)演出日?qǐng)鰰r(shí)，也擔(dān)任一些戲份不多的配角镜撩，在“天光戲”中预柒，還有機(jī)會(huì)演主角。1940年琐鲁，紅線女隨何芙蓮臨時(shí)搭班于靚少鳳的金星劇團(tuán)演出卫旱。1941年在上海演出，紅線女當(dāng)上了第三花旦围段。1943年顾翼，她在肇慶演出，在內(nèi)地第一次用“紅線女”這個(gè)藝名奈泪。從此适贸，她成為“師曾劇團(tuán)的正印花旦。以后到抗戰(zhàn)大后方廣西等地演出了許多馬派劇目涝桅，如《苦鳳鶯憐》《斗氣姑爺》《軟皮蛇招郡馬》等拜姿。抗戰(zhàn)勝利后冯遂，紅線女定居香港蕊肥，成為影劇兩棲演員。1952年蛤肌，在香港組建真善美劇團(tuán)壁却，并與馬師曾、薛覺(jué)先等合演《蝴蝶夫人》《清宮恨史》等劇裸准。1952年展东，她在演出《一代天驕》《王昭君》，改編《蝴蝶夫人》和莎翁名著的實(shí)踐上炒俱，根據(jù)自己的天賦盐肃，嗓音條件爪膊，在傳統(tǒng)旦角的基礎(chǔ)上，融入京腔砸王、昆腔演唱藝術(shù)和西洋美聲技法推盛，創(chuàng)造了“紅腔”。

1955年处硬，返廣州小槐，參加廣東粵劇團(tuán)，先后在廣東粵劇團(tuán)荷辕、廣東粵劇院凿跳、廣州粵劇團(tuán)工作。20世紀(jì)50疮方、60年代控嗜，紅線女曾隨團(tuán)赴朝鮮、越南演出骡显。20世紀(jì)80年代疆栏，面對(duì)粵劇舞臺(tái)演出的不景氣，為振興粵劇惫谤，她重排舊劇壁顶，編演新戲。1988年國(guó)慶前夕溜歪，紅線女率廣州粵劇團(tuán)到北京舉行了“紅線女專(zhuān)場(chǎng)”若专；1994年，紅線女又在北京主演《白燕迎春》蝴猪，成功地塑造廠一個(gè)外科醫(yī)生沈潔的藝術(shù)形象调衰。?2009年，紅線女榮獲首屆“中國(guó)戲劇終身成就獎(jiǎng)”自阱。2013年12月8日嚎莉，在廣州逝世，終年89歲沛豌。

先后主演了《搜書(shū)院》《關(guān)漢卿》《昭君出塞》《李香君》《山鄉(xiāng)風(fēng)云》《昭君公主》《白燕迎春》《刁蠻公主贛駙馬》等許多劇目趋箩。紅腔以粵劇傳統(tǒng)花旦唱腔為基礎(chǔ)，融入京腔加派、昆腔演唱藝術(shù)和西洋美聲技法阁簸，結(jié)合個(gè)人的聲線條件，融匯創(chuàng)造出“甜哼丈、脆、圓筛严、潤(rùn)醉旦、嬌、水”的紅腔風(fēng)格，把粵劇花旦唱腔發(fā)展到了嶄新的階段车胡。在唱腔上檬输，吸收了京劇名家梅蘭芳唱腔、昆劇匈棘、話劇丧慈、歌劇、西洋歌唱主卫、電影等技巧逃默，唱腔表現(xiàn)力更為豐富。她突破了傳統(tǒng)粵劇中單純表現(xiàn)女性媚美的框架簇搅，塑造的一系列個(gè)性鮮明的婦女形象完域，表現(xiàn)出敢愛(ài)敢恨、藐視豪強(qiáng)瘩将、正氣凜然的性格特征吟税，唱腔為了與人物性格統(tǒng)一，表現(xiàn)出了婉約之中帶有悲壯的剛?cè)嵯酀?jì)風(fēng)格姿现。

紅派藝術(shù)在唱腔藝術(shù)上以粵劇傳統(tǒng)花旦唱腔為基礎(chǔ)肠仪，吸收了京劇等其它劇種、以及美聲歌唱备典、電影等的技巧异旧，結(jié)合個(gè)人的聲線條件，融匯創(chuàng)造出了龍頭鳳尾熊经、跌宕起伏泽艘、音域?qū)拸V、清脆秀麗镐依、剛?cè)嵯酀?jì)的紅腔風(fēng)格匹涮；在舞臺(tái)藝術(shù)上，以粵劇傳統(tǒng)花旦舞臺(tái)功架為基礎(chǔ)槐壳，吸收了京劇名家程硯秋的身段藝術(shù)然低，并將俞振飛、周小燕务唐、朱傳茗等戲劇名家的藝術(shù)融為一爐雳攘，突破了傳統(tǒng)粵劇中單純表現(xiàn)女性媚美的框架，塑造了一系列個(gè)性鮮明的婦女形象枫笛，戲路極為寬廣吨灭，不論古代的小家碧玉、宮廷貴人刑巧、青樓妓女喧兄，還是現(xiàn)代革命女性无畔，都能滌盡鉛華，展示出東方女性清香淡雅的氣質(zhì)吠冤、高潔端莊的風(fēng)韻浑彰，表現(xiàn)出敢愛(ài)敢恨、藐視豪強(qiáng)拯辙、正氣凜然的性格特征郭变，以及在抗拒苦難或悲劇命運(yùn)中磨礪出那富于韌性的品格，表演細(xì)膩傳神⊙谋＃現(xiàn)代劇《山鄉(xiāng)風(fēng)云》诉濒，更是在現(xiàn)代劇和傳統(tǒng)表演程式的結(jié)合上獲得了標(biāo)志性的突破，被認(rèn)為是粵劇發(fā)展史上的里程碑遭赂。

Famous Cantonese Artists

Hung Sin-nui (December 27, 1924 -December 8, 2013), whose original name is Kuang Jianlian, is from Han ethnicgroup and her ancestral hometown is in Kaiping, Guangdong. She is well known asa contemporary Cantonese opera performer and founder of the Hung School Art. In2009, she won the China Theatre Lifetime Achievement Award. On December 8,2013, she died in Guangzhou of a sudden myocardial infarction at the age of 89.Hung Sin-nui is a master of Cantonese opera arts. She founded the Hung SchoolArt, one of the most influential schools in tunes of female roles in thehistory of Cantonese opera, making ever-lasting contributions to the Cantoneseopera arts and even Chinese civilization.

Hung Sui-nui was born in Pan village,Shuikou Town, Kaiping county of Guangdong province on the 12th?ofDecember 1924. She lived in Xiguan (Siakwan) with her family and would often goto the theatre with her mother to watch opera performances. After returninghome, she would imitate those performers to sing operas. In 1938 when Japaneseforces invaded China, she was forced to quit school. In July or August of thesame year, she went to Hong Kong with her mother, where she became anapprentice of her aunt He Fulian as her mentor and began to learn opera skillswith the stage name Siu Yin Hung. In the Spring Festival of 1939, she made herdebut as a member of the Shengshounian (long-live) troupe. From that time on,she began practicing martial arts and singing in the troupe and played the roleof maids in the evening performances. When there were daytime performances inthe suburb of Hong Kong, she also played some little supporting roles. In someplays performed at dawn, she even got the chance to play the lead. In 1940, HungSin-nui joined in the Jinxing (Venus) troupe, which was built by He Fulian andLiang Shaofeng. In 1941 when the troupe gave performances in Shanghai, HungSin-nui became the third lead actress (mainly playing roles like an immoralwoman or vicious concubine). While performing in Zhaoqing in 1943, she made herappearance in China's mainland for the first time with the name “Hung Sin-nui”.Since then, she has become the leading actress of the Si Tsang opera troupe.She later went to Guangxi and other areas to perform many plays of the Ma(Si-Tsang) school, likeBitter Phoenix, Sorrowful Oriole,The WittyPatriarch,andThe Love Story of A Prostitute and A Scholar. AfterChina defeated the Japanese forces, Hung Sin-nui settled in Hong Kong andbecame an actress playing in both films and operas. In 1952, she establishedthe Zhenshanmei Cantonese Opera Troupe in Hong Kong, and co-starred with Ma SiTsang and Sit Kok-Sin inMadame Butterfly,Qing Gong Hen Shi?(AStory of Resentment in Qing Palace) and other plays. In 1952, she performed inTheLegend of Wang Zhaojun, and also adaptedMadame ButterflyandShakespeare's famous works. Based on those practices and her own talent as wellas her vocal style, she created “Hung tune” integrating the singing arts ofPeking opera and Kunqu opera as well as the Western bel canto with the singingstyle of traditional Dan roles.

In 1955, she returned to Guangzhouand joined the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Troupe. After this, she worked for theGuangdong Cantonese Opera Theater and then the Guangzhou Cantonese OperaTroupe. During the 1950s and 1960s, Hun Sin-Sui followed the opera troupes toNorth Korea and Vietnam to give performances. In the 1980s, when the stageperformance of Cantonese opera received less support, she adapted old plays andcreated new plays in an effort to reinvigorate Cantonese opera. On the eve ofNational Day in 1988, Hung Sin-nui led the Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Troupe toBeijing to hold an activity of “Hung Sin-nui’s special performances”. In 1944in Beijing, she starred inBai Yan Ying Chun(White-tailed SwallowWelcomes the Spring), in which she successfully brought to life the image ofthe surgeon Shen Jie. In 2009, Hung Sin-nui won the China Theatre LifetimeAchievement Award. On December 8, 2013, she passed away in Guangzhou at the ageof 89.

The plays in which she has starred includedThe Runaway Maid,TheTraditional Opera Writer Guan Hanqing,Zhaojun Marries beyond the GreatWall,The Legend of Lee Heung Kwan,Storm In Mountain Village,Zhaojun Princess,Bai Yan Ying Chun, andThe Sassy Princessand Her Blunt Husband. Based on her own vocal condition, Hung Sin-nuicreated the unique sweet, crisp, smooth and coquettish Hung tune of singingwhich incorporated the techniques of the Peking opera, Kunqu opera, and Westernopera singing methods, bringing the singing of female roles in Cantonese operato a new level of development. She absorbed the singing skills of the MeiLanfang tune, Kunqu opera, Huaju (a form of Chinese drama featuring realisticspoken dialogue), Geju (more focused on singing), Western singing and films andcreated a more expressive one. She broke through the framework of traditionalCantonese opera under which female roles were simply depicted as delicate andbeautiful. She shaped a lot of female characters with distinctivepersonalities, such as daring to love and hate, contemptuous of tyranny andhonesty and righteousness. To match those characters’ personalities, thesinging was of a style that mixed solemnity with gracefulness.

In terms of singing, the Hung School Art incorporated the techniques of thePeking opera in addition to other operas as well as of the bel canto and thefilms. Based on unique personal voice, it combined those skills and created asinging style featuring wonderful beginnings and endings, varying tones, broadvocal registers and a combination of strength and softness. In terms of theperforming art, the Hung School Art absorbed the acting postures of the famousPeking opera singer Cheng Yanqiu, and based on the movements and gestures intraditional Cantonese opera, integrated the arts of many well-known operasingers, such as Yu Zhenfei, Zhou Xiaoyan, and Zhu Chuanming. Through thismethod, the Hung Sin-nui broke through the framework of traditional Cantoneseopera under which female roles were simply depicted as delicate and beautifuland created lots of female roles with distinctive personalities. No matter whatthe role was, a pretty girl of humble birth in ancient times, a noblewoman inthe palace, a prostitute in the brothel or a modern female revolutionist, HungSin-nui would endow it with purity, demureness and delicate elegance exclusiveto oriental women. Her performance was so fine and vivid that she brought tolife many adorable female characters, like those struggling against adversityand growing to be stronger in a tragic life. The modern playStorm inMountain Villagerepresented a prominent breakthrough in the combination ofthe performing techniques of modern drama and traditional plays and wasregarded as a milestone in the history of the development of Cantonese opera.

During the 6th World Festival ofYouth and Students which was held in Moscow from July 29 to August 10, 1957, HungSin-nui sangZhaojun Marries beyond the Great Wall?andOde to Lycheeand was awarded the gold medal in the Oriental Classical Songs Competition. In1985, Hung was awarded the "Outstanding Artist Award" and the"Sun Peace Award" respectively by the American Asia Society and theSymphony Society for the United Nations. In 1990, she received recognition andpraise from the People’s Government of Guangdong. In 1992, she was electedpresident of the Guangdong branch of China Theatre Association. On June 15,2001, Hung Sin-nui received the lifetime achievement award of "The Most OutstandingArtist of the Year 2001" at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in NewYork City. This award, which was set up by the New York City Department ofCultural Affairs, goes annually to Asian artists who have made remarkableachievements. In 2001, Hung was granted the Award for Outstanding Contributionto Cantonese Opera Arts by the People’s Government of Guangdong and theinaugural Award for Achievement in Creation and Research of Styling andPerforming Arts by the Ministry of Culture. On January 1, 2002, she was grantedthe "Award for Outstanding Contribution to Cantonese Opera Arts” by thePeople’s Government of Guangdong Province. On April 7, 2010, she won the"Magnolia" Lifetime Achievement Award.
