If death didn't exist, the first single-cell organism would have divided, the two child cells would have divided again, and the process would have kept going until all available habitat, I.e. the primordial ocean, was completely filled with single-cell organisms. Think of a giant bathtub full of jello. Now think of that going on forever, or for as long as the planet lasts. Nothing more complex could evolve. There would be no room.
