A cold welcome
On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of
the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall
clock. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. Fifteen minutes
passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute
hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly
someone shouted, It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!' I
looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the
New Year. At that moment everybody began to laugh and sing.

新概念英語講解：
1.On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall.
在星期三的晚上错负，我們?nèi)チ耸姓d坟瓢。
語言點(diǎn) the Town Hall=the City Hall市政廳
hall意為“大廳勇边，大堂；過道折联，走廊”：school hall禮堂粒褒；meeting hall會(huì)議廳；exhibition hall展覽廳诚镰；the Great Hall of the People人民大會(huì)堂
2.It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock.
這是一年的最后一天了奕坟，很多人都自發(fā)地聚集在市政廳的鐘下。
語言點(diǎn) last的常用意義：
1）上一個(gè)：last year去年怕享；last month上個(gè)月执赡；last summer去年夏天
2）(=final)最后的：on the last/final day of summer vacaion在暑假的最后一天
3.It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time.
再過20分鐘镰踏，大鐘將敲響12下函筋。
語言點(diǎn)1 "in+一段時(shí)間"可表示“一段時(shí)間之內(nèi)”；也可用于表示“一段時(shí)間之后”奠伪，多用于將來時(shí)跌帐。
1）在……內(nèi)：The bird covered the distance in 3 minutes.這只鴿子只用了3分鐘就飛越了這段距離。
2）在……之后（多與將來時(shí)連用）：I will come back in 5 days.我將在5天后回來绊率。
語言點(diǎn)2 would在此處表示過去將來時(shí)谨敛。
4.Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped.
15分鐘過后，在12點(diǎn)差5分時(shí)滤否，鐘停了脸狸。
語言點(diǎn)1 時(shí)間段+passed and then=時(shí)間段+later……（多長時(shí)間）過后
語言點(diǎn)2 時(shí)間表示法：表示幾點(diǎn)差幾分用to，表示幾點(diǎn)過幾分用past藐俺，通常在半小時(shí)之內(nèi)：
5:40 twenty to six 5:20 twenty past five
12:16 sixteen past twelve 1:32 twenty-eight to two
語言點(diǎn)3 比較學(xué)習(xí)：pass;past
pass v.通過炊甲；n.通行證；及格
past n.過去欲芹；adj.過去的卿啡；prep.越過
5.The big minute hand did not move.
巨大的分針不走了。
語言點(diǎn) move這里作“移動(dòng)”講菱父，如：Move away from the window.從窗戶那兒移開颈娜。
6.We waited and waited, but nothing happened.
我們等啊等啊，但情況依然沒有變化浙宜。
語言點(diǎn)1 用and連接兩個(gè)重復(fù)的動(dòng)詞官辽，表強(qiáng)調(diào)，用于形容動(dòng)作的程度和頻率粟瞬。
語言點(diǎn)2 What happened to you?你怎么了同仆？/What happened to your car？你的汽車出什么事了亩钟？
7.Suddenly someone shouted, It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!'
突然有人大叫道：“已經(jīng)是12點(diǎn)過2分了乓梨，大鐘早就停了鳖轰！”
8.I looked at my watch. It was true.
我看了看手表，果然如此扶镀。
語言點(diǎn)1 有關(guān)look的短語：look at看著蕴侣；look for尋找；look after照顧
語言點(diǎn)2 比較學(xué)習(xí)：
1）true真實(shí)的臭觉，強(qiáng)調(diào)符合事實(shí)或名副其實(shí)的：true love真愛昆雀；true friendship真正的友誼
It's true.是真的。
2）real真正的蝠筑，強(qiáng)調(diào)人或事物是真實(shí)存在的：real life真實(shí)的生活狞膘；real reason真正的理由；real story真實(shí)的故事
9.At that moment everybody began to laugh and sing.
在那一刻什乙，每個(gè)人都開始又唱又笑地慶祝新年挽封。
語言點(diǎn) at the moment=just then在那一刻
