? ? ? How many ways do you know to study a foreign language? Going to an English school and choosing an English lesson? Watching English movies or TVs? Learning English pop songs? Yes, all of them are good methods. But for young children, What is the best way? They are too young to go to any English schools. They can’t understand what happened in the English movies. And they aren’t able to learn too many pop songs.

? These years, I am studying an education major for children English learning called “Picture Books Reading”.

? ? ? Listening, speaking, reading and writing are the four important skills for learning foreign language. Reading is the goal and also the method. The education expert Huang Yuanshen mentioned : every language learning requests large quantity of reading, include English learning.

? ? ? English picture books are very good for little children because it is colorful and beautiful. Reports show that colors and shapes are more attractive to young children at their age. Their mind and attention will choose pictures first then letters. So picture books show their irreplaceable place in children English learning.

? ? ?And every book introduces an interesting story. By the interesting story, picture books can help children to get to know the culture. From the book “Teddy’s shed”, they can know that American likes brown bears named teddy. Different with us, we like our toy bears to be pink or bright yellow. That is because the first president Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a black bear when he went hunting. So the little brown bear named by his name “Teddy” came to and was famous in America.

? ? ? Then, picture books can develop language ability of the children. There are many rhyme in picture books. For example, ?in “the cat nap” 训枢，Children can learn many words quickly by reading: “The top cat had a nap in a hat. The kit cat had a nap in a cap. “ So the children can learn the rule of pronouncing “a”. Then after they knew the basic rule, they can read the story. Now, the children can find their fun in learning English.

? ? ? The children are too young to read picture books by themselves. We can help them in these 3 steps.

? ?1.Before reading, we can find some chants or games connected with the story.

? ? ? 2.Then, tell the story or read the story with feelings, happiness or sadness, try to act it , try to attract them, rebuilt the situation in books. At this conception, ”read and point” is a better way to younger children. Because you know, Chinese is block characters, but English looks like a line, a string. So point when reading is more helpful.

? ? ? ?3.After reading, encourage the children to imitate or retell the story. if they like , disperse their thought to make a different ending and lead them to think why did the story go like that. When they have read <<Ma Liang>>, ask them: what will you do if you have a magic paintbrush? Why did Ma Liang only paint food for the old man? Why didn’t he paint gold for her? These questions will help them to think about the world ,about their lives.

? ? ? There are varies picture books, science, history, and so on. The most special thing of picture books is it will help children to love with reading , to widen their vision. They will see a huge world from this little book. So, picture books is very good and useful to young children.
