1. 本來是個動詞馆铁,后來演變成為介詞莱睁,但仍然保留一些動詞的痕跡嘿期,例如在always excepting...或not excepting...的詞組中掂铐。
2. except雖然是個介詞罕拂,但是它后面可以不是名詞成分而是另一介詞短語或是一個狀語成分。I hardly see her these days except at work. 除了在工作中堡纬,這些天我很少看見她聂受。/ He does not study except under compulsion. 他除非是被強(qiáng)迫,否則是不學(xué)習(xí)的烤镐。/ Except on one occasion, Kant had never been out of Knigsberg. 除了一次之外蛋济,康德從來沒有離開過孔尼斯堡。/ He was always cheerful except when he was penniless. 他除非是身無分文的時候炮叶,平惩肼茫總是高高興興的渡处。
3. except也可以用作并列連詞,相當(dāng)于but祟辟,但是意思往往表示前一句的內(nèi)容遇到障礙或限制(有點(diǎn)像“夕陽無限好医瘫,只是近黃昏”中的“只是”,此時后一句的語氣沒有用but那樣重 )旧困,例如:I like this car very much, except I don't have enough money. 這輛車我很喜歡醇份,只是我的錢不夠。
4. except與except for的區(qū)別是:except是同類事物中除去例外吼具;except for是大范圍中除去小類事物作為例外僚纷。i.e Everybody was invited except me. 除了我,人人都獲得了邀請(me屬于everybody之中)拗盒。/ Except for one old lady, the bus was empty. 除了有一位老太太之外怖竭,公共汽車是空的(bus是大范圍,one old lady是小類事物)陡蝇。/ The wooden part, black except for a few scattered electric carbon arc lights, came into view. 木質(zhì)部分痊臭,除了有一些零星的電碳弧燈,一片漆黑登夫,此時進(jìn)入了視線广匙。/ The classroom was silent, except for the busy scratching of pens on paper. 課堂很安靜,只有筆在紙上忙碌劃擦的聲音悼嫉。/ The office will be empty over Christmas except for the boss and me. 圣誕節(jié)期間辦公室沒人艇潭,只剩下頭頭和我。/ Except for emergencies I have found it easier not to expect any help from my children. 除非遇到緊急情況戏蔑,我已經(jīng)認(rèn)識到,不期待我的孩子們來幫忙鲁纠,就更加方便一些总棵。
5. 但是except for還可以表示“要不是因?yàn)椤薄xcept for you I think I would have failed. 要不是有了你改含,我想我本來會失敗的情龄。/ He would have got away with it except for that one mistake. 要不是又那一步之差,他本來是可以得逞的捍壤。放在句末時也可以引入表示轉(zhuǎn)折的一個從句(意思相當(dāng)于“可是”)骤视。【例如】I'd tell you, except for the fact that... 我本來會告訴你鹃觉,可是…在這個意義上专酗,也可以用except that...【例如】We would stay longer except that we have no more money. 我們本來要多停留一些時間,可是我們的錢花光了
