The first flight of China's C919 was a success, achieving a 60% domestic production rate. The global aviation industry has entered the era of ABC
May 28th, 2023 is a memorable day as it marks the successful global commercial maiden flight of China's domestically produced C919 aircraft. China Eastern Airlines operated the MU9191 flight using the C919 from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport to Beijing Capital International Airport. From now on, passengers will be able to travel with domestically manufactured large aircraft. This signifies the beginning of a new era in the international large aircraft market, ushering in the ABC era.
The domestic production rate of China's domestically produced large aircraft is as high as 60%.
The successful commercial flight of the C919 marks China as the third economy in the world capable of manufacturing large aircraft, alongside Boeing of the United States and Airbus of the EU. Amongst airlines with the ability to produce large regional jets are Canada's De Havilland, Brazil's Embraer, Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, and China's Commercial Aircraft Corporation (COMAC). In the past, Japan's Mitsubishi invested heavily in the production of regional jets with a capacity of 76-88 seats, but the project was declared unsuccessful on February 7th, 2023. Therefore, China is now the only country in East Asia that possesses the capability to produce large aircraft.
It is worth mentioning that the domestic production rate of China's C919 airliner is as high as 60%. By comparison, the domestic production rate for different types of Boeing planes and Airbus planes is only maintained between 40% to 70%. Hence, the independent research and development strength of China in the field of large aircraft is very commendable.
Russia used to have the capability to manufacture large aircraft and was the only country that could possibly achieve 100% domestic production rate for large aircraft. However, due to funding problems, Russia is currently unable to produce its own large aircraft. Therefore, the production of large aircraft not only symbolizes technological strength but also serves as an embodiment of a country's economic might.
The C919 aircraft's outer shell contains high technology.
I remember in high school, my chemistry teacher introduced China's development of large aircraft in class, which left a deep impression on me. In the 1980s, China attempted to develop a civilian large aircraft, namely the Yun-10. This large aircraft was developed through reverse engineering of the American Boeing 707 and underwent over 100 test flights but was eventually terminated.
At that time, where did China fail? It was the aerospace material science related to the aircraft's outer shell. The material for the aircraft's outer shell needs to possess stability, flexibility, and light weight. At that time, China's material science was not as developed as it is now, resulting in high maintenance costs.
The technology of the C919 aircraft's outer shell contains black technology which has completely been independently researched and developed. A large amount of titanium is used to ensure the stability of the aircraft structure, and no deformation is found during repeated flights. This greatly reduces operating costs and ensures safety. Western aviation industries can sell engines to China, but they will never provide China with aircraft shell raw materials alloys. Therefore, China's aviation personnel have overcome the most important bottleneck in the production of large aircraft.
The C919 is equipped with domestically produced Beidou positioning system.
C919 chief designer Wu Guanghui once introduced the black technology of the C919 avionics system in a class at Southern Airlines.
In terms of flight control, the C919 has incorporated a large number of automation and boundary protection technologies. If the pilot makes an error during flight, the aircraft can autonomously correct it, minimizing the accident rate.
The C919 is also equipped with China's independently developed Beidou satellite navigation system. During flight, in addition to navigation, the black box can also communicate in real-time with satellites and automatically report various parameters of the aircraft.
The world's aviation market for large aircraft enters the ABC era.
Previously, there were only representatives of A from Airbus of the European Union and B from Boeing of the United States in the global market for large aircraft. The letter C in the initialism C919 stands for China. The successful maiden flight of China's large aircraft, the C919, signals that the world's aviation market for large aircraft has entered the ABC era.
