Do not read it through from the beginning to the end.
First pass: See the frame of the paper.?
Read the abstract, introduction, conclusion, section headings and any tables and diagrams (including their captions); Underline any phrases and words that are unfamiliar and check them later. When reading the paper the first time, ask questions such as: What is the point/thesis of this paper? What are the arguments of this paper? Why is this paper important? How does it contribute to my field of study? etc. At the end of the first pass, try to summarize the paper in one sentence or two in my own words.
Second pass: Really dig into the paper
Pay closer attention to the beginning and ending to each major section. Also pay attention to any of the highlights in the sections in the first pass. Look up all the concepts that I still do not understand. Try to answer all the questions I wrote down before.
Third pass: Tied all up together. Time for reflection & analysis
Summary the arguments (try to use my own word as much as I can), evidence and conclusions (get the basis of the summary). Ask and answer questions such as: ?Did the author do what they set out to do? Are the methods they used sound? Are their arguments fluid and logical? What assumptions did they make??
