? ? ? ? My Views on Imitation and Innovation
Can we imagine what our world would be if we had no innovation? Without innovation, even if our ancestors made careful observations on their surroundings, they couldn’t make Four Great Inventions. Although some inventions seem quite common nowadays, they once did deal a deathblow to the society. For instance, the invention of the compass opened up the oceans for exploration and led to the discovery of the New World.
However, when it comes to imitation, people often frown at it instead of seeing the positive sides of it. Actually, most innovation begins with imitation. Some great inventions go closely hand in hand with imitation. Imitation is often the launchpad for most of innovations. Many Chinese "imitations", such as Alibaba, Tencent or Sina Weibo, have proven that they have moved far beyond being mere copies of US inventions. In a way this could be seen as the imitation behind the innovation, which brings great changes to the society.
Nevertheless, imitation on its own is useless, unless it bears the potential to go beyond the ‘tried and tested’ experience. Imitation is a vital step to innovation, which eventually exerts a magic pull on people and expands their horizon. It is not an exaggeration to say that both imitation and innovation have great influence on the advancement of both individuals and society.
We should always bear in mind that imitation and innovation are of great significance to us all. Hence, we need to develop the practice of imitating new things, using new methods and applying new thoughts in everything we do. Imitation and innovation will exist as long as we want to live in a better world.
