?? Ned rose quickly. “Our men or Lannister’s?”

?? “It was Jory,” his steward Vayon Poolereplied. “She’s not been harmed.”

?? “Thank the gods,” Ned said. His men had beensearching for Arya for four days now, but the queen’s men had been out huntingas well. “Where is she? Tell Jory to bring her here at once.”

?? “Damn that woman!” Ned said, striding to thedoor. “Find Sansa and bring her to the audience chamber. Her voice may beneeded.” He descended the tower steps in a red rage. He had led searches himselffor the first three days, and had scarcely slept an hour since Arya haddisappeared. This morning he had been so heartsick and weary he could scarcelystand, but now his fury was on him, filling him with strength.

?? Men called out to him as he crossed thecastle yard, but Ned ignored them in his haste. He would have run, but he wasstill the King’s Hand, and a Hand must keep his dignity. He was aware of theeyes that followed him, of the muttered voices wondering what he would do.

?? The castle was a modest holding a half day’sride south of the Trident. The royal party had made themselves the uninvitedguests of its lord, Ser Raymun Darry, while the hunt for Arya and the butcher’sboy was conducted on both sides of the river. They were not welcome visitors.Ser Raymun lived under the king’s peace, but his family had fought beneathRhaegar’s dragon banners at the Trident, and his three older brothers had diedthere, a truth neither Robert nor Ser Raymun had forgotten. With king’s men,Darry men, Lannister men, and Stark men all crammed into a castle far too smallfor them, tensions burned hot and heavy.

?? The king had appropriated Ser Raymun’saudience chamber, and that was where Ned found them. The room was crowded whenhe burst in. Too crowded, he thought; left alone, he and Robert might have beenable to settle the matter amicably.

國(guó)王把雷蒙爵士的會(huì)客廳臨時(shí)征來(lái)處理公務(wù)仇穗，奈德果然在此找到他們纹坐。他沖進(jìn)房間時(shí)耘子，里面已經(jīng)擠滿了人谷誓。太擁擠了捍歪，他心想糙臼，假如沒(méi)這么多人变逃，他和勞勃應(yīng)該可以私下心平氣和地解決此事。

?? Robert was slumped in Darry’s high seat atthe far end of the room, his face closed and sullen. Cersei Lannister and herson stood beside him. The queen had her hand on Joffrey’s shoulder. Thicksilken bandages still covered the boy’s arm.

勞勃臉色凝重，整個(gè)人跨坐在長(zhǎng)廳盡頭戴瑞的高位上嚷炉。瑟曦·蘭尼斯特和她兒子站在他身旁申屹。王后把一只手搭上喬佛里的肩膀。男孩的手臂仍舊扎滿厚重的絲質(zhì)繃帶嚷那。

?? Arya stood in the center of the room, alonebut for Jory Cassel, every eye upon her. “Arya,” Ned called loudly. He went toher, his boots ringing on the stone floor. When she saw him, she cried out andbegan to sob.

?? Ned went to one knee and took her in hisarms. She was shaking. “I’m sorry,” she sobbed, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”

?? “I know,” he said. She felt so tiny in hisarms, nothing but a scrawny little girl. It was hard to see how she had causedso much trouble. “Are you hurt?”

?? “We’ll feed you soon enough,” Ned promised.He rose to face the king. “What is the meaning of this?” His eyes swept theroom, searching for friendly faces. But for his own men, they were few enough.Ser Raymun Darry guarded his look well. Lord Renly wore a half smile that mightmean anything, and old Ser Barristan was grave; the rest were Lannister men,and hostile. Their only good fortune was that both Jaime Lannister and SandorClegane were missing, leading searches north of the Trident. “Why was I nottold that my daughter had been found?” Ned demanded, his voice ringing. “Whywas she not brought to me at once?”

?? He spoke to Robert, but it was CerseiLannister who answered. “How dare you speak to your king in that manner!”

他本是對(duì)勞勃說(shuō)話葫哗，但瑟曦·蘭尼斯特卻搶先開口：“放肆捺典！你竟敢用這種口氣對(duì)國(guó)王說(shuō)話员咽！”

?? At that, the king stirred. “Quiet, woman,”he snapped. He straightened in his seat. “I am sorry, Ned. I never meant tofrighten the girl. It seemed best to bring her here and get the business donewith quickly.”

?? “And what business is that?” Ned put ice inhis voice.

?? The queen stepped forward. “You know fullwell, Stark. This girl of yours attacked my son. Her and her butcher’s boy.That animal of hers tried to tear his arm off.”

?? “That’s not true,” Arya said loudly. “Shejust bit him a little. He was hurting Mycah.”

?? “Joff told us what happened,” the queensaid. “You and the butcher boy beat him with clubs while you set your wolf onhim.”

?? “That’s not how it was,” Arya said, close totears again. Ned put a hand on her shoulder.

?? “Yes it is!” Prince Joffrey insisted. “Theyall attacked me, and she threw Lion’s Tooth in the river!” Ned noticed that hedid not so much as glance at Arya as he spoke.

?? “Enough!” the king roared, rising from hisseat, his voice thick with irritation. Silence fell. He glowered at Aryathrough his thick beard. “Now, child, you will tell me what happened. Tell itall, and tell it true. It is a great crime to lie to a king.” Then he lookedover at his son. “When she is done, you will have your turn. Until then, holdyour tongue.”

?? As Arya began her story, Ned heard the dooropen behind him. He glanced back and saw Vayon Poole enter with Sansa. Theystood quietly at the back of the hall as Arya spoke. When she got to the partwhere she threw Joffrey’s sword into the middle of the Trident, Renly Baratheonbegan to laugh. The king bristled. “Ser Barristan, escort my brother from thehall before he chokes.”

當(dāng)艾莉亞開始陳述事情始末時(shí)，奈德聽見(jiàn)身后大門開啟害捕。他往后一瞄绿淋，只見(jiàn)維揚(yáng)·普爾帶著珊莎走了進(jìn)來(lái)。他們靜靜地站在廳堂后方聽艾莉亞說(shuō)話尝盼。當(dāng)她說(shuō)到把喬佛里的劍丟進(jìn)三叉戟河那段時(shí)吞滞，藍(lán)禮·拜拉席恩忍不住哈哈大笑，國(guó)王則怒發(fā)沖冠，“巴利斯坦爵士裁赠，請(qǐng)護(hù)送我弟弟出去殿漠，免得他笑岔了氣∨謇蹋”

?? Lord Renly stifled his laughter. “My brotheris too kind. I can find the door myself.” He bowed to Joffrey. “Perchance lateryou’ll tell me how a nine-year-old girl the size of a wet rat managed to disarmyou with a broom handle and throw your sword in the river.” As the door swungshut behind him, Ned heard him say, “Lion’s Tooth,” and guffaw once more.

?? Prince Joffrey was pale as he began his verydifferent version of events. When his son was done talking, the king roseheavily from his seat, looking like a man who wanted to be anywhere but here.“What in all the seven hells am I supposed to make of this? He says one thing,she says another.”

接著輪到喬佛里說(shuō)他那個(gè)大相徑庭的版本出皇，他的臉色非常蒼白羞芍。兒子說(shuō)完之后，國(guó)王沉重地起立郊艘，那樣子恨不得能及早脫身荷科。“你叫我怎么辦纱注？他說(shuō)的是一回事畏浆，而她說(shuō)的卻完全是另一回事∧”

?? “They were not the only ones present,” Nedsaid. “Sansa, come here.” Ned had heard her version of the story the night Aryahad vanished. He knew the truth. “Tell us what happened.”

?? His eldest daughter stepped forwardhesitantly. She was dressed in blue velvets trimmed with white, a silver chainaround her neck. Her thick auburn hair had been brushed until it shone. Sheblinked at her sister, then at the young prince. “I don’t know,” she saidtearfully, looking as though she wanted to bolt. “I don’t remember. Everythinghappened so fast, I didn’t see?.?.?.?”

?? “You rotten!” Arya shrieked. She flew at hersister like an arrow, knocking Sansa down to the ground, pummeling her. “Liar,liar, liar, liar.”

?? “Arya, stop it!” Ned shouted. Jory pulledher off her sister, kicking. Sansa was pale and shaking as Ned lifted her backto her feet. “Are you hurt?” he asked, but she was staring at Arya, and she didnot seem to hear.

?? “Seven hells,” Robert swore. “Cersei, lookat her. She’s a child. What would you have me do, whip her through the streets?Damn it, children fight. It’s over. No lasting harm was done.”

?? The queen was furious. “Joff will carrythose scars for the rest of his life.”

?? Robert Baratheon looked at his eldest son.“So he will. Perhaps they will teach him a lesson. Ned, see that your daughteris disciplined. I will do the same with my son.”

?? “Gladly, Your Grace,” Ned said with vastrelief.

?? Robert started to walk away, but the queenwas not done. “And what of the direwolf?” she called after him. “What of thebeast that savaged your son?”

?? The king stopped, turned back, frowned. “I’dforgotten about the damned wolf.”

國(guó)王停下腳步，轉(zhuǎn)身皺眉道：“我倒是把那頭該死的狼給忘了匆篓』攵龋”

?? Ned could see Arya tense in Jory’s arms.Jory spoke up quickly. “We found no trace of the direwolf, Your Grace.”

奈德看見(jiàn)艾莉亞在喬里懷中繃緊身子，喬里連忙開口：“陛下鸦概，那只狼一點(diǎn)影子都沒(méi)有箩张。”

?? Robert did not look unhappy. “No? So be it.”

勞勃看來(lái)并無(wú)不悅窗市∠瓤叮“找不到？那就算了谨设∈斓啵”

?? The queen raised her voice. “A hundredgolden dragons to the man who brings me its skin!”

王后則提高音量：“把狼皮給我剝來(lái)的，賞金龍一百枚扎拣！”

?? “A costly pelt,” Robert grumbled. “I want nopart of this, woman. You can damn well buy your furs with Lannister gold.”

“這毛皮還真貴赴肚，”勞勃咕噥，“臭女人二蓝，我可沒(méi)興趣誉券。你要買就用你他媽蘭尼斯特家的錢去買】蓿”

? ?The queen regarded him coolly. “I had notthought you so niggardly. The king I’d thought to wed would have laid awolfskin across my bed before the sun went down.”

?? Robert’s face darkened with anger. “Thatwould be a fine trick, without a wolf.”

勞勃臉色一沉踊跟，怒道：“沒(méi)狼還能鋪得滿床狼皮，你當(dāng)我會(huì)變魔術(shù)鸥诽？”

?? “We have a wolf,” Cersei Lannister said. Hervoice was very quiet, but her green eyes shone with triumph.

“誰(shuí)說(shuō)我們沒(méi)有狼商玫？”瑟曦·蘭尼斯特說(shuō)。她的語(yǔ)氣非常沉靜牡借，但那雙碧眼里卻閃著勝利的光芒拳昌。

?? It took them all a moment to comprehend herwords, but when they did, the king shrugged irritably. “As you will. Have SerIlyn see to it.”

?? The king was in no mood for more argument.“Enough, Ned, I will hear no more. A direwolf is a savage beast. Sooner orlater it would have turned on your girl the same way the other did on my son.Get her a dog, she’ll be happier for it.”

國(guó)王已經(jīng)沒(méi)心情再爭(zhēng)論下去羹膳。“別說(shuō)了根竿，奈德陵像，這事到此為止湃缎。冰原狼本來(lái)就野性難改，假如不除掉蠢壹，你女兒遲早會(huì)跟我兒子一樣遭殃。幫她弄條狗九巡，她會(huì)快樂(lè)點(diǎn)图贸。”

?? That was when Sansa finally seemed tocomprehend. Her eyes were frightened as they went to her father. “He doesn’tmean Lady, does he?” She saw the truth on his face. “No,” she said. “No, notLady, Lady didn’t bite anybody, she’s good?.?.?.?”

?? “Lady wasn’t there,” Arya shouted angrily.“You leave her alone!”

“淑女當(dāng)時(shí)根本不在場(chǎng)丰刊，”艾莉亞生氣地叫道隘谣，“你不要欺負(fù)她！”

?? “Stop them,” Sansa pleaded, “don’t let themdo it, please, please, it wasn’t Lady, it was Nymeria, Arya did it, you can’t,it wasn’t Lady, don’t let them hurt Lady, I’ll make her be good, I promise, Ipromise?.?.?.?” She started to cry.

She was the smallest ofthe litter, the prettiest, the most gentle and trusting. She looked at him withbright golden eyes, and he ruffled her thick grey fur.

?? Bending, Ned pulled back the cloak, dreadingthe words he would have to find for Arya, but it was not Nymeria after all. Itwas the butcher’s boy, Mycah, his body covered in dried blood. He had been cutalmost in half from shoulder to waist by some terrible blow struck from above.

?? The Hound’s eyes seemed to glitter throughthe steel of that hideous dog’s-head helm. “He ran.” He looked at Ned’s faceand laughed. “But not very fast.”
