企者不立；跨者不行键思；自見者不明础爬；自是者不彰；自伐者無功吼鳞；自矜者不長看蚜。其在道也，曰馀食贅形赔桌，物或惡之失乾，故有道者不居。
He who stands on tiptoe does not stand (firm); He who strains his strides does not walk (well); He who reveals himself is not luminous; He who justifies himself is not far-famed; He who boasts of himself is not given credit; He who prides himself is not chief among men. These in the eyes of Tao are called "the dregs and tumors of Virtue," which are things of disgust. Therefore the man of Tao spurns them. 踮著腳尖站立的人站不穩(wěn)纬乍〖钭拢跨大步伐走路的人走不好。顯擺自己的人不夠顯眼仿贬。為自己辯解的人名氣不夠昭彰纽竣。自我吹噓的人別人不會把功勞歸于他。矜持傲慢的人無法成為人們的領(lǐng)袖茧泪。從“道”的層面來看蜓氨，這些都是道德的渣滓和累贅，是可惡的東西队伟。因此得“道”的人唾棄它們穴吹。
