今天換了一本書,The Craft of Research, 四年后重讀這本書拖陆,覺得自己很幸運(yùn)弛槐。后天就要開始新的學(xué)期了,作為一個慢熱的人依啰,覺得自己就像是百公里加速需要半個小時的老破車乎串,除了喇叭不響,哪兒都響的那種速警。但是加起速來之后就好啦叹誉。只要不放棄鸯两,就不會有失望。
看了書长豁,跑了步钧唐,睡前做翻譯,睡得香匠襟。
原文:
That plan for a draft helps researchers write, but created with their readers in mind, it also helps readers read.
翻譯:
打草稿列大綱钝侠,學(xué)者能寫得順暢,而且做計劃時心中有讀者酸舍,讀者也能讀得痛快帅韧。
這句話看似簡單,其實很容易糾結(jié)啃勉。個人習(xí)慣了劍走偏鋒忽舟,所以help這種詞我是覺得不會翻譯成“幫助”的,也不可能翻譯成“讓”“使”淮阐,總覺得怪萧诫,中國人不那么說話。中文習(xí)慣主語開頭枝嘶,前后正好可以形成主語的對應(yīng)帘饶,“學(xué)者”對應(yīng)“讀者”,就很順便地用了這種結(jié)構(gòu)群扶。第二個就是對help的理解及刻,我對help的理解是“因果關(guān)系”,相當(dāng)于“if you plan for a draft, you write better.” “如果……就……”的結(jié)構(gòu)竞阐,中文里又可以雙雙省略連接詞缴饭,哈哈,那就省略掉吧骆莹。第三個難點颗搂,“but”,這里的“but”不是轉(zhuǎn)折幕垦,而是遞進(jìn)或者并列丢氢,后面有個“also”,雖然我也是第一次見“but also”離得那么遠(yuǎn)先改。

翻譯:
你的這種滿足疚察,很大程度上是因為你能肯定,你的研究成果延續(xù)了你所在圈子的交流互動仇奶,如果你覺得這個發(fā)現(xiàn)能改變讀者觀念和思路貌嫡,從而改善他們生活的話,就會更加滿足。
又一句看似簡單岛抄,卻很難用中文表述的話别惦。第一個難點,“knowing”和“believe”的對比夫椭,“knowing”不是“知道”步咪,而應(yīng)該是“確定,肯定”益楼。比如“You really think I can do this? I know you can do it!”第二個猾漫,“fabric of a community”,如果每個人是一根線的話感凤,這些線交織在一起就變成了“fabric”(布)悯周,網(wǎng)上能查到“social fabric”,網(wǎng)友給的解釋是“interaction between social members”陪竿,我覺得放在這里的語境下還算適用禽翼。其他的就是些小伎倆啦。

When you arrange and rearrange the results of your research in new ways, you discover new implications, connections, and complications. Even if you could hold it all in mind, you would need help to line up arguments that pull in different directions, plot out complicated relationships, sort out disagreements among experts. That's why careful researchers never put off writing until they've gathered all the data they need: they write from the beginning of their project to help them assemble their information in new ways.

如果換個方式組合研究結(jié)果族跛,會發(fā)現(xiàn)它們之間新的含義闰挡、聯(lián)系和問題。哪怕光靠腦子能記住礁哄,也得借外力羅列不同角度的論據(jù)长酗,勾勒復(fù)雜的關(guān)系,理清不同專家的分歧桐绒。所以夺脾,謹(jǐn)慎的學(xué)者從來不會等到搜集了所有數(shù)據(jù)之后,才開始動筆:一般來說茉继,研究一開始咧叭,他們就下筆了,這樣能用新思路安排行文烁竭。

But it would be a feeble education that did not change you at all, and the deeper your education, the more it will change the "you' that you are or want to be. That's why it's so important to choose carefully what you study and with whom. But it would be a mistake to think that learning to write sound research reports must threaten your true identity.
