Guards Briante Weber and Rodney McGruder, and forwards Stefan Jankovic and Okaro White insist there won’t be extra pressure on them in training camp next month despite their non-guaranteed contracts.

“I just go in and handle what I got to do,” Weber said Monday at a back-to-school event at Shadowlawn Elementary in Miami. “Worrying about other people is not really my strong suit. So all I can do is be me and take care of what I can take care of.”

For most of the offseason, Weber was looked at as the Heat’s backup point guard behind starter Goran Dragic. But last week’s signing of free agent point guard Beno Udrih to a guaranteed one-year contract puts Weber in a tough spot.

The 23-year old Weber impressed as a member of the Heat’s summer league team this offseason, averaging 9.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.3 assist and 3.9 steals in nine games. But it still might not be enough to convince Miami to pick him over Udrih, who has played in 792 NBA games compared to Weber’s seven NBA games.

“My mindset is never going to change no matter who is in front of me, no matter how many people there are. I’m just going to be me,” Weber said. “I’m not going to change anything about how I do my things. I’m not going to try to be a different person. I’m just going to be the best Briante I can be.”

One advantage Weber does have is on the defensive end of the floor. The 6-foot-2 point guard finished his college career as VCU’s all-time steals leader with 374 steals before suffering a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus during his senior season in January 2015 that ended his college career.
“He’s an animal defensively,” Jankovic said. “He really gets after it, which is rare these days. He takes pride in that. Offensively, his game is there too. He creates and he’s just very, very defensively minded, which is rare.”
But Weber is going to have to prove in training camp that he deserves a spot on the Heat’s regular-season roster. While McGruder, Jankovic and White have an even smaller chance of making the team, they will take the same approach into camp as Weber.
“All I can control is my energy and my effort when I go in the gym every day,” McGruder said. “I feel like every situation takes care of itself. What happens in life is going to happen. You have no control over that, all you can control is your energy and effort.”
