Charles Bukowski是位作家捺癞，書中提到的Don’t try來自于他的epitaph（墓志銘）褒繁。我找到了Charles自己解釋Don’t try的文本：

實用表達
? At night, he would drink alone and sometimes **hammer out **poetry on his **beat-up **old typewriter.

今天的閱讀章節(jié)中，hammer出現(xiàn)了兩次通熄。hammer out表示“苦心想出”罐寨，hammered在口語中表示“喝醉了”自沧，類似的表達還有tipsy(微醺）,buzzed（微醺）, drunk, wasted（喝斷片了）。
我認為hammer out在文中的hammer是一個雙關(guān)明刷，和drink alone呼應，也表示“苦心想出”满粗。醉了就寫詩辈末，和李白似的。
另外學到：beat-up表示“破舊不堪”映皆，常用來形容房子破挤聘，車破。

cripple是個五星級好詞捅彻，本義表示“使殘疾“组去，也可以用于表示“使...心里出現(xiàn)問題“ “嚴重毀壞組織、體系“步淹。
說它是五星級好詞从隆，是因為它形象、實用缭裆。例如《中國合伙人》中键闺，鄧超飾演的角色有stage fright，因此他無法做公開演講澈驼。這時候我們就可以說：Stage fright crippled him.

shot在這表示“chance”辛燥。我們常說的give it a try也可以說成give it a go/shot。
? His popularity **defied** everyone’s expectations.
defy本身的意思是“不服從” “挑戰(zhàn)“缝其，在這里可以理解為“超過了每個人的預期”挎塌。常用的表達還有：defy description難以表述；defy comprehension難以理解内边。
? You are constantly **bombarded** with messages to give a fuck about everything.

今天閱讀內(nèi)容中出現(xiàn)了兩次be bombarded with榴都，這個表達值得用起來。下次咱們想說我們每天都被大量的信息包圍就可以說：We are** inundated/flooded/overwhelmed/bombarded** with information.

Chances are是你必須掌握的一個表達假残，因為它極其實用缭贡，這本書中共出現(xiàn)了9次。(the) chances are (that)表示it is likely to happen… 當我想表達“很有可能”的時候就可以用上它辉懒，明天在你的筆記中造幾個句子吧阳惹！

breed本意表示“繁殖“，常用來表示”產(chǎn)生眶俩，引起“莹汤，很有畫面感。例如Violence breeds violence.暴力會催生更多暴力颠印。類似的常見表達還有spawn（大量產(chǎn)出）, churn out（快速大量的產(chǎn)出）, beget（引起）纲岭。
[西瓜]學點語法
1. Thirty years **went by** like this, most of it a meaningless blur of alcohol, drugs, gambling, and prostitudes.
從這句話中我們可以學到兩點：1) 30年“過去了”的“過去了”可以用went by表示抹竹，還可以用什么表示呢？在今后的閱讀中你會找到同意表達的止潮，注意收集窃判。2) most of it a meaningless blur of alcohol… 這部分并沒有【謂語】，因為這是一個獨立結(jié)構(gòu)喇闸，如果有謂語的話這段話就寫錯了袄琳。
2. **Despite** the book sales and the fame, Bukowski was a loser.
despite這個詞是寫作、口語中必備的一個詞燃乍，全書出現(xiàn)了24次唆樊，務必掌握。
3. **Had I been** indifferent, **I would have shrugged **my shoulders, sipped my mocha, and downloaded another season of The Wire.
had I been… I would have done… 是常見的虛擬語氣句型變形刻蟹，它的原型是：If I had been… I would have done…
