Some Hong Kong politicians have suggested we call ourselves?Greater Bayers?because Hong Kong is part of the central government’s plan to create a Greater Bay Area high-tech?hub?to rival Silicon Valley in California. I don’t think the suggestion to call ourselves?Greater Bayers?will?fly. The central government finally revealed details of its Greater Bay Area plan last week, more than two years after the idea was first announced. The Greater Bay Area plan is made up of 11 cities, including Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and seven other cities in Guangdong province. Last week, the central government announced that Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Macau will have the most important roles.
A Hongkonger?is a Hong Kong person. Some, but not all, English-language newspapers use this term. The term “Greater Bayer” is a new term that some Hong Kong politicians started using after China announced its plan for a Greater Bay Area. The word “hub” used this way means the center of activity. Silicon Valley is the US?hub?of high-tech innovations. The word “fly” has many meanings but used this way it means succeed. I don’t think calling ourselves?Greater Bayers?will?fly?because about 70 million people live in the 11 cities that are part of the Greater Bay Area. Will?Macanese?want to call themselves?Greater Bayers? Macanese?are Macau people.
Will Guangzhou people want to call themselves?Greater Bayers? Will Shenzhen people want to call themselves?Greater Bayers?instead of Shenzhen people? I am sure Hongkongers?will not want to call themselves?Greater Bayers. Silicon Valley, in the southern?Bay Area?of northern California, is made up of cities that include San Jose, Palo Alto, and Menlo Park. People there do not call themselves Silicon Valleyers. The northern part of the?Bay Area?in northern California includes San Francisco and Napa, where wine is produced. People in San Francisco often say they are from the?Bay Area?but still call themselves?San Franciscans, which means San Francisco people.

廣州人會想自稱為大灣人（Greater Bayers）麼歧沪？深圳人又會想自稱為大灣人（Greater Bayers）而非深圳人歹撒？我敢肯定，香港人（Hongkonger）不會想自稱為大灣人（Greater Bayers）诊胞。位於北加州灣區(qū)（Bay Area）南部的矽谷栈妆，由聖荷西、帕羅奧圖及門洛公園組成厢钧，那裏的人都不會叫自己做矽谷人。北加州灣區(qū)（Bay Area）的北部則包括了三藩市和納帕嬉橙，就是盛產(chǎn)葡萄酒之處早直。三藩市的人常說他們來自灣區(qū)（Bay Area），但仍會叫自己做 San Franciscans市框，即是三藩市人霞扬。中譯：七刻
