Rachel: Are they…promiscuous?

Tom: Depends on the time of year. This lot seem pretty excited.

Rachel: It’s spring.

Tom: The law of the jungle.

Rachel: (laughs) In St. James’s Park?

Tom: Tougher that. The urban jungle. There, they don’t even keep the rules of promiscuity.

Rachel: I didn’t know there were rules.

Tom: So my promiscuous friends tell me. No promises, no pregnancies, no comeback.

Rachel: No feelings, no love…

Tom: No guilt, no remorse.

Rachel: Hmm, it’s tricky. (pause) I must be getting old.

Tom: You look younger every time I see you.

Rachel: You’ve only seen me twice!

Tom: Well at Jane’s party, you looked older. Perhaps it was the eye makeup and the candlelight…

Rachel: It’s funny. Women over thirty are supposed to look better in candlelight and dread daylight.

Tom: Better? I didn’t say better.

Rachel: Ah.

Tom: You look lovely then, you look lovely now.

Rachel: I wish you wouldn’t say that.

Tom: I like saying it.

Rachel: Anyway, all that candlelight rubbish is magazine stuff, really. It’s not my style.

Tom: What is your style?

Rachel: I don’t have time to style, at home with two children.

Tom: You’ve made time to meet me.

Rachel: That’s ?different.

Tom: Is it? I’m glad.

(They laugh)

Tom: Do you always meet people when they’ve chatted you up at a dinner party?

Rachel: Do you?

Tom: Never done it before, seriously.

Rachel: Seriously?

Tom: Like this…you didn’t answer my question.

Rachel: Of course I don’t meet people who chat me up!

Tom: Until now.

Rachel: I had to be in town anyway, that’s different, surely. (pause) Isn’t it?

Tom: I think so, but…perhaps it was something else.

Rachel: Something else?

Tom: (suggestive) Our meeting isn’t quite…casual, as it is. You and me.

Rachel: I’m not sure what you mean.

Tom: I think you do, Rachel.

Rachel: I had to be at an interview. I’m looking for a job!

Tom: Of course, but I think there’s something else going on.

Rachel: Tom, I wish you wouldn’t -

Tom: Ah, why don’t we spend the day out -

Rachel: No, don’t…I’d better be getting back…children…

Tom: I’ll see you to the Tube.

Rachel: Don’t you have to be somewhere?

Tom: I told them I’m at a psych meeting. New building going up.

Rachel: That’s a lie.

Tom: So what? You’re lying too.

Rachel: (laughs) No I’m not. No one asked me where I’d be.

Tom: Then, perhaps we meet up again. Like this.

Rachel: How, like this?

Tom: Casually, but intentionally. Unharmonied.
