Then he began to pity the great fish that he had hooked. He is wonderful and strange and who knows how old he is, he thought. Never have I had such a strong fish nor one who acted so strangely. Perhaps he is too wise to jump. He could ruin me by jumping or by a wild rush. But perhaps he has been hooked many times before and he knows that this is how he should make his fight. He cannot know that it is only one man against him, nor that it is an old man. But what a great fish he is and what will he bring in the market if the flesh is good. Summary
老人出海了记某，帶著他的樂觀與自信司训，駛向了他深愛的大海。這一次老人的運(yùn)氣不錯(cuò)液南，他捕到了一只巨大的馬哈魚壳猜。對此，老人先是喜悅贺拣，想著自己的噩運(yùn)終于終結(jié)蓖谢；而后同情大魚捂蕴，為大魚感到遺憾；再后把魚當(dāng)做一個(gè)值得欽佩的敵人闪幽，和大魚作斗爭啥辨；最后感動(dòng)，為大魚的死而黯然神傷盯腌。

老人在船上的時(shí)候一直在思念著男孩溉知，呼喊著“要是男孩也在就好了”，希望男孩在船上協(xié)助腕够，分享他的喜悅與成就级乍。
“I wish I had the boy” the old man said aloud. “I’m being towed by a fish and I’m the towing bitt.
Then he said aloud, “I wish I had the boy. To help me and to see this.”
“I wish the boy was here,” he said aloud and settled himself against the rounded planks of the bow and felt the strength of the great fish through the line he held across his shoulders moving steadily toward whatever he had chosen.
“I wish the boy were here and that I had some salt,” he said aloud.
“I told the boy I was a strange old man,” he said.
注意，這幾句全部都用的“said”帚湘，而不是“thought”玫荣，可見老人的孤獨(dú)之深。在茫茫大海之中大诸，他終于轉(zhuǎn)運(yùn)捅厂，捕到了大魚。但他的體力不足以支撐把魚從水里提出來资柔，他的成就無人分享焙贷，他的傷痛無人治愈，空留寂寞和遺憾贿堰。心中悲苦的他辙芍，只能一遍一遍地呼喚，希望他唯一的朋友男孩此時(shí)能陪伴在身邊羹与。
