The bar graph illustrates the number of international students from four countries (China, Japan, America and Russia) that a European university admitted in a five year period from 2004 to 2008.
Generally speaking, the international students coming from China and America constitute a significant majority of the student populace while Russia sends the lowest number of international applicants to the university in Europe with its students figure accounting for less than 10%. The total number of students each year of the four countries reflects a slight undulatory upward trend to 55,000 from around 45,000 at the bottom during the first four years (2004 to 2007).
During the five year time span (2004 to 2008), both the number of international students from China and Russia dropped to some extent. China experienced a steady decline in the number of students studying in the European university from 2004 to 2006 from 27,000 to 17,000 and remained constant in the following year (2007) then a slight fall in 2008 to 15,000. While Russia witnessed a significant eight time rise in the first four years (2004 to 2007) from 1000 to 8000 yet a sharp fall to 4000 in 2008.
Nevertheless, the number of Japanese international students continuously increased and doubled to 10,000 from 5000 in the five year period. In contrast, the figure of American overseas candidates decreased noticeably from 20,000 to 15,000 in the first two years (2004 to 2005), then went up slightly from 15,000 to 17,500 in the following two years (2005 to 2006). The figure then plummeted a good proportion from 17,500 to the bottom at 10000 from 2006 to 2007 until peaked at 27,500 in 2008.
