The boy had given him two fresh small tunas, or albacores, which hung on the two deepest lines like plummets and, on the others, he had a big blue runner and a yellow jack that had been used before; but they were in good condition still and had the excellent sardines to give them scent and attractiveness.?

Each line, as thick around as a big pencil, was looped onto a green-sapped stick so that any pull or touch on the bait would make the stick dip and each line had two forty-fathom coils which could be made fast to the other spare coils so that, if it were necessary, a fish could take out over three hundred fathoms of line. Now the man watched the dip of the three sticks over the side of the skiff and rowed gently to keep the lines straight up and down and at their proper depths. It was quite light and any moment now the sun would rise. The sun rose thinly from the sea and the old man could see the other boats, low on the water and well in toward the shore, spread out across the current.?
每一條魚(yú)線大概都像一枝船筆那么粗奥喻，上面還捆了一個(gè)用樹(shù)脂做的小桿子，只要魚(yú)餌一被拉動(dòng)或碰觸非迹，小桿子便會(huì)往沈环鲤。另外每一條線隨時(shí)都還可以連接兩卷四十噚長(zhǎng)的預(yù)備線，必要時(shí)憎兽，一條魚(yú)最長(zhǎng)可以拖出三百噚長(zhǎng)的線±淅耄現(xiàn)在，老人守著小船旁的三根小木棍纯命，等待看到它們往下沉西剥，他慢慢地劃著，使魚(yú)線隨時(shí)保持垂直并垂到應(yīng)有的深度亿汞。天色已十分亮了瞭空，太陽(yáng)馬上就會(huì)升起來(lái)了。太陽(yáng)微微地從海面升起疗我，老人看見(jiàn)了水平線另一邊的其它船只咆畏，朝著海岸，在水流之上散布開(kāi)來(lái)吴裤。

Then the sun was brighter and the glare came on the water and then, as it rose clear, the flat sea sent it back at his eyes so that it hurt sharply and he rowed without looking into it. He looked down into the water and watched the lines that went straight down into the dark of the water. He kept them straighter than anyone did, so that at each level in the darkness of the stream there would be a bait waiting exactly where he wished it to be for any fish that swam there. Others let them drift with the current and sometimes they were at sixty fathoms when the fishermen thought they were at a hundred. But, he thought, I keep them with precision.

Only I have no luck any more. But who knows? Maybe today. Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready. The sun was two hours higher now and it did not hurt his eyes so much to look into the east. There were only three boats in sight now and they showed very low and far inshore. All my life the early sun has hurt my eyes, he thought. Yet they are still good. In the evening I can look straight into it without getting the blackness. It has more force in the evening too. But in the morning it is painful.

Just then he saw a man-of-war bird with his long black wings circling in the sky ahead of him. He made a quick drop, slanting down on his back-swept wings, and then circled again. "He's got something," the old man said aloud. "He's not just looking." He rowed slowly and steadily toward where the bird was circling. He did not hurry and he kept his lines straight up and down. But he crowded the current a little so that he was still fishing correctly though faster than he would have fished if he was not trying to use the bird.
就在這個(gè)時(shí)候第焰，他看見(jiàn)一只軍艦鳥(niǎo)，展開(kāi)那長(zhǎng)長(zhǎng)的黑色翅膀妨马，在他前方的天空中盤旋挺举，突然之間杀赢，它將翅膀向后一收，傾身直往下伏沖湘纵，然后又開(kāi)始盤旋脂崔。「它一定是抓到什么了梧喷，」老人大聲地說(shuō)：「它并不光是看看而已砌左。」他緩慢而穩(wěn)定地劃向鳥(niǎo)兒盤旋的地點(diǎn)铺敌，他一點(diǎn)也不匆忙汇歹，仍舊保持他的魚(yú)線垂直朝下。但是他稍微設(shè)法排擠水流偿凭，以便保持正常的捕魚(yú)作業(yè)产弹，不過(guò)他的船速是比往常捕魚(yú)時(shí)快了一些，若不是為了要利用這只鳥(niǎo)弯囊，他不會(huì)這么做的痰哨。

The bird went higher in the air and circled again, his wings motionless. Then be dove suddenly and the old man saw flying fish spurt out of the water and sail desperately over the surface. "Dolphin," the old man said aloud. "Big dolphin." He shipped his oars and brought a small line from under the bow. It had a wire leader and a medium-sized hook and he baited it with one of the sardines. He let it go over the side and then made it fast to a ring bolt in the stern. Then he baited another line and left it coiled in the shade of the bow.
鳥(niǎo)兒往空中飛高了些，并且再度盤旋匾嘱，它的翅膀一動(dòng)也沒(méi)動(dòng)斤斧。然后它突然間往下伏沖，老人看見(jiàn)飛魚(yú)從水中跳出來(lái)奄毡，拼命地掠過(guò)水面折欠。「海豚吼过，」老人大聲叫著：「大海豚∵浣保」他擱下槳盗忱，由船頭下拿一條小魚(yú)線，上面有一段鐵絲線和一個(gè)中型魚(yú)鉤羊赵，他把它裝上沙丁魚(yú)的魚(yú)餌趟佃，然后把它從船邊放下去，再固定在船尾的環(huán)狀螺釘上昧捷，接著闲昭，他裝上另外一條魚(yú)線的餌，把線卷好放在船頭的陰影處靡挥。

He went back to rowing and to watching the long-winged black bird who was working, now, low over the water. As he watched the bird dipped again slanting his wings for the dive and then swinging them wildly and ineffectually as he followed the flying fish. The old man could see the slight bulge in the water that the big dolphin raised as they followed the escaping fish. The dolphins were cutting through the water below the flight of the fish and would be in the water, driving at speed, when the fish dropped.
他又回過(guò)頭來(lái)劃船序矩，并注意看著那只長(zhǎng)翅膀的黑鳥(niǎo)，現(xiàn)在跋破，它正低低地飛在水面上準(zhǔn)備覓食簸淀。
正當(dāng)他目不轉(zhuǎn)睛地看著的時(shí)候瓶蝴，那鳥(niǎo)傾斜著翅膀，再度伏沖下來(lái)租幕，然后猛烈卻徒勞無(wú)益地拍打著翅膀舷手，追逐著飛魚(yú)。老人看見(jiàn)大海豚凸出的身軀驚鴻一瞥地在水中升起劲绪，緊追著逃跑的飛魚(yú)男窟。海豚在飛魚(yú)飛躍的水面之下一路游過(guò)來(lái)，當(dāng)魚(yú)潛入水中時(shí)贾富，海豚正好可以在那兒加速追趕蝎宇。

It is a big school of dolphin, he thought. They are widespread and the flying fish have little chance. The bird has no chance. The flying fish are too big for him and they go too fast. He watched the flying fish burst out again and again and the ineffectual movements of the bird. That school has gotten away from me, he thought. They are moving out too fast and too far. But perhaps I will pick up a stray and perhaps my big fish is around them. My big fish must be somewhere.
這是好大一群海豚啊，他想祷安。它們散布地太廣姥芥，飛魚(yú)幾乎沒(méi)有逃命的機(jī)會(huì)，就連鳥(niǎo)兒也沒(méi)有捕食的機(jī)會(huì)了汇鞭。飛魚(yú)的身軀太大凉唐，速度也太快了。他眼看著飛魚(yú)一次又一次地從水面跳起來(lái)霍骄，以及鳥(niǎo)徒勞無(wú)功的行動(dòng)台囱。老人想，那群海豚已經(jīng)離我遠(yuǎn)去了读整，它們實(shí)在游動(dòng)得太快也太遠(yuǎn)了簿训。但是，也許我能抓到一條落單的米间，也或許我要的大魚(yú)就在它們里面强品。我的大魚(yú)一定在某個(gè)地方。

The clouds over the land now rose like mountains and the coast was only a long green line with the gray blue hills behind it. The water was a dark blue now, so dark that it was almost purple. As he looked down into it he saw the red sifting of the plankton in the dark water and the strange light the sun made now. He watched his lines to see them go straight down out of sight into the water and he was happy to see so much plankton because it meant fish.
陸地上的云像山巒一樣地升起了屈糊，海岸變成了一條長(zhǎng)長(zhǎng)的綠線的榛，后面襯著灰藍(lán)色的小山丘。此刻海水是深藍(lán)色的逻锐，深得幾乎發(fā)紫夫晌。他往水中望去，看見(jiàn)紅色的浮游生物在深色水中飄浮著昧诱，以及此刻陽(yáng)光照在水中所呈現(xiàn)的奇異色彩晓淀。他注視著魚(yú)線，看著它們筆直地垂在水中盏档，直到消失在視線中凶掰。他很高興看見(jiàn)有這么多浮游生物，因?yàn)檫@就表示附近有魚(yú)。

The strange light the sun made in the water, now that the sun was higher, meant good weather and so did the shape of the clouds over the land. But the bird was almost out of sight now and nothing showed on the surface of the water but some patches of yellow, sun-bleached Sargasso weed and the purple, formalized, iridescent, gelatinous bladder of a Portuguese man of war floating close beside the boat. It turned on its side and then righted itself. It floated cheerfully as a bubble with its long deadly purple filaments trailing a yard behind it in the water.
由于太陽(yáng)又升高了些锄俄，陽(yáng)光照射在水中所呈現(xiàn)的奇異色彩和陸上云朵的形狀一樣都暗示著好天氣局劲。但是，現(xiàn)在那鳥(niǎo)幾乎已射下已經(jīng)褪色的黃色馬尾藻奶赠，和一只紫色有毒的水母了鱼填。它伸張著須夷，凝膠狀的氣囊飄浮到船邊毅戈，翻了個(gè)身苹丸，然后又復(fù)原，在水面上彷佛一個(gè)氣泡一樣好輕松愉快地飄浮著苇经，身后拖著一條有毒的紫色細(xì)絲赘理，在水里漂著有一碼長(zhǎng)的距離。
