As one of China's promising young actors. Hu Ge's passion in his craft is felt and appreciated by many. The next stage of his career will see his transformation into a bona fide actor, and millions will be watching to witness his success.
Q:You’ve done a lot of wuxia-themed works. What is the appeal of martial arts for you?
A:In China, every boy dreams of becoming a martial arts hero. It’s a ‘profession’ that still holds a lot of charm, even in modern times.
Q:Are you afraid of being typecast?
A:Not at all. I believe there’s an age and time to do certain things. The roles I’m taking of now wouldn’t have interested me 10 years ago, and the characters I currently portray are only possible with my maturity and experience as an actor.
Q:Ever considered exploring different roles and genres?
A:I’m trying all sorts of roles at the moment, in contemporary as well as period dramas. My priorities for selecting work are a good script or an interesting character, where I can perform and excel as an actor. That’s the most important to me.
Q:What’s your idea of the perfect role right now?
A:There’s this saying, “It’s always the next one.”
Q:Share with us your thoughts on your idol status.
A:I’ve always said I’m very lucky as an actor. When I first started out, I was well-received and gained fame and recognition quite quickly, which provided many opportunities for my career. But being famous isn’t my job; acting is, and I now have a clear idea of my (career) path after having spent 10 years in this line. It isn’t easy and luck may not always be on your side, but hard work and dedication helps.
Q:You also have an interest in directing.
A:When I was little, I came across a luxury-advertising programme that featured some really amazing commercials. That sparked my interest in creative advertising, which led me to apply for a directing course at the Central Drama Academy in Beijing.
Q:Do you still aspire to be a director?
A:I’m not suited to multitasking; I prefer to focus on one thing and do it well, and right now that’s acting for me. Perhaps I’ll consider directing in my forties.
