Trump's Pulpit: UN General Assembly
The United Nations has long prompted hawkish Republicans to dream of wrecking-balls. One Republican UN ambassador said its headquarters could lose ten storeys without "a bit of difference". Strikingly, President Donald Trump sees a fixer-upper needing renovation. Though no fan of multilateralism, Mr Trump has said that—though UN spending is "out of control"—the world body has "tremendous potential." During the bloc's General Assembly, which kicks off today, expect several Trump interventions, including an American-led meeting for governments committed to reforming (ie, streamlining) the UN's global agenda, and a presidential address on September 19th. The UN has delivered Mr Trump wins, including a unanimous Security Council vote in August on North Korea sanctions. But there are limits. Much tougher North Korea sanctions are being resisted by veto-wielding Russia and China. Meanwhile the State Department has been told to send fewer diplomats to the meeting. No demolition squads, but it's still America First.
