Why the CR-V's Lack of a Volume Knob is Mostly Not an Issue
Our2015 Honda CR-Vlong-termer is knobless, and that’s no reason for the crossover to feel embarrassed. After driving the CR-V for thousands of miles, I’ve come to realize that—as a driver—I no longer have a use for volume or tuning knobs. That’s right, I don’t miss the knobs and instead appreciate the extra half-inch the refreshed 2015 CR-V’s display screen gained, in part, by eliminating volume and tuning knobs.

At least, that’s how I feel as a driver. When you’re alone, removing your hand from the steering wheel to reach a volume knob is not only not as safe as keeping your hands on the steering wheel, but it’s also less convenient compared with stretching your left thumb to the wheel’s volume up button. Press and hold that easy-to-find button, and in just a second or two, the volume increases by a few levels. I don’t see the inconvenience, but associate online editor Erick Ayapana felt different about the issue with ourlong-term 2015 Honda Fit.

If you generally yield DJ duties to a front passenger, the little plus and minus volume buttons on the right side of the 7-inch display won’t cut it and a radio-station tuning knob could help. Ultimately, I’ve found that the larger screen of 2015-2016 models (plus that wonderful second screen at the top of the dash) and the steering wheel controls combine to form an advantage over the previous system in most situations.

Speaking of screens, one of my favorite CR-V features is a screen that’s unmatched by countless other cars on the market today. As you compare the CR-V’s screen size and infotainment system to others in its class, keep in mind the CR-V also has an additional, smaller screen (called i-MID byHonda) positioned at the very top of the dash—or in other words, the best placement for optimal visibility. That screen is standard on all CR-Vs, and the 7-inch screen below is offered on EX and above. Below the CR-V EX trim, Honda includes a volume knob and physical preset buttons.

The i-MID screen allows drivers to multiscreen info nearly as effectively as fancy luxury cars with 12.3-inch screens. View song titles and artist info on the top screen and the navigation map on the bottom, fuel economy info on the top screen and audio info on the bottom, or any number of other combinations. For extra personalization, as with my last long-term car (the 2015 Kia K900), I sometimes view on the lower, 7-inch screen a wallpaper image I uploaded to the car with useful info on the top screen. This is a level of flexibility you simply can’t find in many other cars in this price range, and it’s something I really value.
