As publishing has entered the digital era, reading is becoming more convenient for individuals. Consequently, nowadays an increasing number of people obtain information on the internet through smart phones, laptops, notebooks and tablets. Some assume that there is no need to purchase or subscribe physical printed books, magazines, and newspapers. From my perspective, I quite disapprove of this view.
Admittedly, with the rising number of electronic subscribers, publishing organizations are digitizing their services so as to cater to growing digital users. On e-readers or mobile e-reading apps, users can not only download thousands of e-books for free or at lower prices, but also browse online magazines and newspapers at all times and places. Furthermore, some e-readers like Amazon Kindle provide the function of offline accessibility, allowing people to use them even in the absence of an internet connection. Despite these advantages of digital media, traditional paper media is still irreplaceable and indispensable.
First and foremost, real books are three dimensional physical objects with length, width, height, weight, texture, and smell. Besides, while reading traditional books, readers can easily write comments in the margins, take notes in the back, and reread important sections. Therefore, with print books, it’s more convenient for a reader to go back and confirm the information he or she may be unsure of.
More importantly, a study of preschoolers between the ages of three and five has revealed that kids tend to have lower comprehension of the story when their parents read to them from an e-book instead of a print book. Researchers speculate that this is because children are distracted by electronic devices and it is difficult for them to concentrate on the story itself.
The same is true of printed magazines and newspapers. A printed magazine or a newspaper can pack a huge amount of information into a format that is portable, durable and doesn’t require electricity from a battery or a cord. In particular, the pages of a newspaper are large enough to put multiple stories, photos, graphics, short things and ads into a single view.
In a nutshell, in spite of the fact that reading news and books on the internet is much widespread, printed books, magazines, or newspapers are still essential sources for people to get information.
