A century ago, less than five percent of all people lived in cities. However, it is estimated that 2025 will witness the growth of China’s urban numbers to a cool billion. As urbanization has been occurring around the globe at a rapid rate, it has caused heated discussion. Those who support urbanization hold that urbanization can lead to sustained economic growth; however, I assume urbanization has more negative sides.
First, the process of urbanization has destroyed as much as it has built. In their head-long rush to be rich and modern, many cities such as Beijing, Nanjing, and Xi’an, once among the world's great urban treasures, have been transformed into just nodes of globalised consumerism.
Second, the process of urbanization has consumed a staggering amount of rural countryside and devoured a lot of productive farmland, which may cause food shortage in the long run since China has the largest population in the world.
Third, in terms of the impact on the environment and resources, the process of urbanization has been making China a nation of motorists, which has caused air pollution. With the increasing number of landless farmers pouring into cities, they put pressure on cities to provide jobs, houses and other services.
In a word, the disadvantages of urbanization outweigh its advantages.
