Lesson 5 No wrong numbers 無(wú)錯(cuò)號(hào)之虞

Mr. James Scott has a garage in Silbury and now he has just bought another garage in Pinhurst. Pinhurst is only five miles from Silbury, but Mr. Scott cannot get a telephone for his new garage, so he has just bought twelve pigeons. Yesterday, a pigeon carried the first message from Pinhurst to Silbury. The bird covered the distance in three minutes. Up to now, Mr. Scott has sent a great many requests for spare parts and other urgent messages from one garage to the other. In this way, he has begun his own private telephone service.

• can: You use can to indicate that someone has the ability or opportunity to do something.
• take a message: 傳口信; 帶著信件用 carry.
• Up to now 到目前為止. 此處搞不懂 until 和 up to now 的區(qū)別. (查:<常用詞疑難用法>)
  1. I didn't receive his letter until yesterday. Not until yesterday did I received his letter. (receive是瞬間動(dòng)詞, 如果沒(méi)有被否定, 不用用于延續(xù)狀態(tài)的主句中; 但一旦被否定, 就是延續(xù)狀態(tài)). 該句表達(dá)的意思是: 沒(méi)有收到信的狀態(tài)一直延續(xù)到昨天才發(fā)生變化.
  2. I stayed here until he came. stay是延續(xù)行為
  3. until 接的必須是瞬間完成的時(shí)間點(diǎn). 例外是使用一個(gè)狀態(tài)來(lái)表示這個(gè)狀態(tài)的瞬間變化. eg. Must policy making wait utile all data are in?
  4. 大概這么理解: 延續(xù)狀態(tài) util time point. 瞬間狀態(tài) by time point.
  5. 易錯(cuò)誤句: He simply couldn't wait until tomorrow night. wait是延續(xù)動(dòng)詞, 這里表達(dá)意思的順序是 couldn't (wait until tomorrow night). 不是理解為一直到明天晚上才等待.
  6. 復(fù)雜用法: Not until ... do. Not util I left home did I begin to understand how strange my family was.
  7. 再?gòu)?fù)雜用法: It's now until ... that ...; It's not until I left home that I began to understand how strange my family was.
  8. 更復(fù)雜. It takes until .. before ...; 直到 ... 才 ...; It took until I left home before I began to understand how strange my family was.
  9. 所以, until now 或者 until then 都會(huì)包含發(fā)生變化的意義. eg. Until now, you've had no choice where you bought your electricity or gas. Now the choice is yours. 從前，你從哪里買你的電力或煤氣，是無(wú)法選擇的∽咔鳎現(xiàn)在選擇權(quán)在你手里（情況發(fā)生了變化）誊辉。eg. She was assigned to Nebraska where, until then, the company had had no sales representation. 她被派往內(nèi)布拉斯加矮冬，原先該公司在那里沒(méi)有推銷代理機(jī)構(gòu)（發(fā)生了變化宗雇，現(xiàn)在有了）插爹。
  10. up to now 或 so far 并無(wú)變化之意. eg. They were using charcoal right up to my day. 直到如今炼彪，他們還一直是用煤吐根。

I am the founder of Scott's Car Garage and the garage has two branches. One is in Silbury and the other is in Pinhurst. Although there is[=> are] only five miles between Silbury and Pinhurst, but the communication between these two branches troubles[=> troubled 170118 過(guò)去困擾] me, because I did not manage to get a telephone for ''[=> the] new branch in Pinhurst. My reliable assistant suggested me to communicate with pigeons and I took his advice and bought twelve pigeons. Yesterday, a pigeon took three minutes to 'take'[=> carry] the first letter from Pinhurst to Silbury. By far, I have sent a great[=> large] number of messages of requesting spare parts and other urgent letters. In this way, my own private "telephone" service 'starts'[=> has started].
