Grandma Said “Never start fights”
作者:陳國雄
On my first day of school
Grandma gave me a warning
I can still hear today
Running out
With the screen door slamming behind me
Grandma on the front porch
Yelling 3 timeless words
“Don’t start fights”
I heard it many times
From Grandma and Grandpa
In different ways
Growing up
Without mom or dad around
I came to know my grandparents well
They were different people
From a dying time
Grandma patted my back with soft love
While Grandpa dished out tough love to me
Grandpa made sure I got an equal share of each
Grandma reminds me each new school year
‘Don’t start fights’
Grandpa winks every time Grandma says this
And quickly tells me ‘Just finish them’
Grandpa dishes out hard love
He likes to pull me aside to say
‘Just finish them’
Always comes after
‘Don’t start fights’
Whenever Grandpa winks at me
He is saying
“Never swing first”
“Always swing last”
That was grandpa
Making sure I made it home safe
From school each day
‘Never swing first’ kept me out of trouble
‘Always swing last’ kept me alive
That’s what caring grandparents
Can do for you
That’s what my grandparents
Did for me
