在英語學(xué)習(xí)中，more than 和 less than 的使用頻率相當(dāng)高减宣，用法也較為復(fù)雜界轩。筆者在此將其做分別歸類画饥，以便同學(xué)們在學(xué)習(xí)中參考。
一浊猾、more than
1. more than 可放在數(shù)詞之前抖甘，表示“超過；不止葫慎；以上”衔彻，用于此義時可與 over 互換使用。
Altogether more than 70 percent of the surface of our planet is covered by water.整個說來偷办，我們這個星球的表面有百分之七十以上為水所覆蓋艰额。
2. more than 可放在名詞之前，表示“不只是椒涯；不僅僅”柄沮。
Hibernation is more than sleep.
冬眠不僅僅是睡眠。
Bamboo is used for more than building.
竹子不只是用于建筑逐工。
3. more than 可用于形容詞或副詞前铡溪，表示“非常；十分”泪喊，與 very 同義棕硫。
She is more than careful.
她非常細心。
In class, he listens more than attentively.
在課堂上袒啼，他聽講十分認真哈扮。
4. more than 之后接帶有 can 的從句時，常表示“否定意義”蚓再。此時滑肉，從句中的謂語必須是及物動詞，并且與句子的主語發(fā)生邏輯上的動賓關(guān)系摘仅。
This secret is more than we can let out.
這個秘密我們是不能泄露的靶庙。（主語secret是let out的邏輯賓語。）
less than 表示“不娃属；很少六荒；不到”，具有否定意義矾端，接形容詞掏击、副詞。
We were busy and less than delighted to have company that day.
那天我們很忙秩铆，不高興有客人來砚亭。
The young man is less than twenty years old.
這個年輕人不到20歲。
二、more…than
1. 表示“與其……不如……”捅膘；“是……而不是……”添祸，常可與 rather than 或 not so much…as 互換使用篓跛。
He is more like a spear than anything else.
與其說他（指大象）像別的什么東西膝捞，不如說他像一根梭鏢。
= He is like a spear rather than anything else.
= He is not so much like anything else as like a spear.
He is more poltroon than cautious.
與其說他謹慎不如說他是怯懦愧沟。
2. more…than 之后接含有 can 的從句同樣表示否定意義蔬咬。
Tom has more insolence than I can stand. =Tom's insolence is more than I can stand. 湯姆的傲慢使我難以忍受。（見上面第一大條第4點）
less … than 意思是“不像……沐寺；不是……”林艘。
Joseph is less honest than his brother.
約瑟弗不是（像）他兄弟那樣誠實。
三混坞、no more than 或 not any more than
兩者的意思均為“只有狐援；僅僅；不過”（= only; just）究孕。前者多用于書面語啥酱；后者常用于口語。
Abram Lincoln's whole school education added up to no more than one year.
亞伯拉罕·林肯所受的全部學(xué)校教育總共不過一年厨诸。
no less than 意思是“不少于镶殷；不下于…之多；多達”
In that battle, we wiped out no less than twenty thousand enemies.
在那一次戰(zhàn)役中微酬，我們消滅敵人不下兩萬人绘趋。
四、no more … than 或 not … any more than
1. 表示“和……一樣地不……”颗管，意味著兩者都否定陷遮，但往往著重說明前面的一個分句，其作用相當(dāng)于 neither … nor垦江。
Mary is no more diligent than Tom. = Neither Mary nor Tom is diligent.
瑪麗和湯姆倆人都不勤奮帽馋。
2. 表示“不……正如……不……一樣”，常用來加重說話者的語氣比吭。
We can no more leave the Party than fish can leave water.
我們不能離開黨绽族，正如魚兒離不開水一樣。
no less…than 表示“（至少）和……一樣”
He is no less active than he used to be.
他和以前一樣活躍梗逮。
五、not more than
常用于數(shù)詞之前绣溜，意為“至多慷彤；頂多；不超過”，其意義與 at (the) most 相同底哗。
There on some hay on the ground lay a peasant boy of not more than seventeen. 地上的干草上躺著一個農(nóng)家孩子岁诉，最多不過17歲。
not less than 表示“不少于”跋选，意義同 at (the) least涕癣。
Our school has not less than three thousand students.
我們學(xué)校的學(xué)生不下三千人。
六前标、not more …than
表示“不如……坠韩；不及于……”，語氣常著重于后面的一個分句炼列，持桓椋可與 not so / as … as 互換使用。
This story is not more interesting than that one. = This story is not so / as interesting as that one. 這個故事不如那個故事有趣俭尖。
嚴格說來 not less … than 的意思是“至少不比……差”氢惋，意味著或許還要強一些，但現(xiàn)在基本和 no less than 混用稽犁。
His English is not less than yours.
他的英語至少不比你的英語差焰望。
