With increasingly expanding cultural exchange and cooperation among countries, some individuals approve of the idea that students should be sent abroad for a particular length of time to acquire native language and culture, which is an essential part of education. As for me, I strongly incline to the viewpoint.
Admittedly, living and learning abroad are beneficial for students to have some insight into the language and culture of their new host country. Studies have indicated that immersion is the best way to become fluent in another language and understand another culture.
First and foremost, studying abroad grants students the valuable opportunity to completely immerse themselves in a new environment. Furthermore, by interacting with native language speakers every day, it would be easier to grasp the language in relevant cultural context. To be specific, when people are in a brand-new country with different outlooks, customs and activities, they will find incredible new foods, customs, traditions, and social atmospheres, which are the firsthand cultural experiences.
Besides, a person who studies and lives overseas may develop a well-informed mindset and wider perspective towards other cultures, which will be conducive to facing modern challenges and coming up with innovative solutions. As students learn to view the world through different lenses, they can think more openly and creatively. More importantly, studying and living abroad really brings out a person’s independent nature. Students who learn and live abroad become explorers of their new nation and really discover the curiosity and excitement that they harbor. In a sense, adaptability, tolerance, leadership, independence and global understanding are directly fostered by overseas living and learning.
In conclusion, it is my view that living and learning abroad for an indeterminate period is indispensable and irreplaceable for students to enhance not only their understanding of language and culture but also a constellation of abilities.
