Mr. Bennet was among the earliest of those who waited on Mr. Bingley. He had always intended to visit him, though to the last always assuring his wife that he should not go; and till the evening after the visit was paid, she had no knowledge of it. It was then disclosed in the following manner. Observing his second daughter employed in trimming a hat, he suddenly addressed her with, "I hope Mr. Bingley will like it, Lizzy."
班納特先生盡管在自己太太面前自始至終都說是不想去拜訪彬格萊先生，事實(shí)上一直都打算去拜訪他炮姨，而且還是跟第一批人一起去拜訪他的嫩痰。等到他去拜訪過以后么抗，當(dāng)天晚上太太才知道實(shí)情干奢。這消息透露出來的經(jīng)過是這樣的－－他看到第二個(gè)女兒在裝飾帽子，就突然對(duì)她說： “我希望彬格萊先生會(huì)喜歡你這頂帽子庐舟，麗萃猪半。”
"We are not in a way to know what Mr. Bingley likes," said her mother resentfully, "since we are not to visit."
她母親氣憤憤地說：“我們既然不預(yù)備去看彬格萊先生在旱，當(dāng)然就無從知道他喜歡什么摇零。”
"But you forget, mama," said Elizabeth, "that we shall meet him at the assemblies, and that Mrs. Long has promised to introduce him."
“可是你忘啦桶蝎，媽媽驻仅，”伊麗莎白說，“我們將來可以在跳舞會(huì)上碰到他的登渣，郎格太太不是答應(yīng)過把他介紹給我們嗎噪服？”
"I do not believe Mrs. Long will do any such thing. She has two nieces of her own. She is a selfish, hypocritical woman, and I have no opinion of her."
“我不相信郎格太太肯這么做。她自己有兩個(gè)親侄女胜茧。她是個(gè)自私自利粘优、假仁假義的女人仇味，我睢不起她”⑺常”
"No more have I," said Mr. Bennet; "and I am glad to find that you do not depend on her serving you."
“我也瞧不起她丹墨，”班納特先生說；“你倒不指望她來替你效勞嬉愧，這叫我聽到高興贩挣。”
Mrs. Bennet deigned not to make any reply; but unable to contain herself, began scolding one of her daughters.
班納特太太沒有理睬他没酣，可是忍不住氣王财，便罵起女兒來。
"Don't keep coughing so, Kitty, for heaven's sake! Have a little compassion on my nerves. You tear them to pieces."
“別那么咳個(gè)不停四康，吉蒂搪搏，看老天爺份上吧！稍許體諒一下我的神經(jīng)吧闪金。你簡(jiǎn)直叫我的神經(jīng)要脹裂啦疯溺。”
"Kitty has no discretion in her coughs," said her father; "she times them ill."
“吉蒂真不知趣哎垦，”她的父親說囱嫩；“咳嗽也不知道揀個(gè)時(shí)候÷┥瑁”
"I do not cough for my own amusement," replied Kitty fretfully.
“我又不是故意咳著玩兒墨闲。”吉蒂氣惱地回答道郑口。
"When is your next ball to be, Lizzy?"
“你們的跳舞會(huì)定在那一天開鸳碧，麗萃？”
"Tomorrow fortnight."
“從明天算起犬性，還得再過兩個(gè)星期瞻离。”
"Aye, so it is," cried her mother, "and Mrs. Long does not come back till the day before; so it will be impossible for her to introduce him, for she will not know him herself."
“唔乒裆，原來如此套利，”她的母親嚷道，“郎格太太可要挨到開跳舞會(huì)的前一天才能趕回來鹤耍；那么肉迫，她可來不及把他介紹給你們啦，她自己也還不認(rèn)識(shí)他呢稿黄『吧溃”
"Then, my dear, you may have the advantage of your friend, and introduce Mr. Bingley to her."
“那么，好太太杆怕，你正可以占你朋友的上風(fēng)族购，反過來替她介紹這位貴人啦鼻听。”
"Impossible, Mr. Bennet, impossible, when I am not acquainted with him myself; how can you be so teasing?"
“辦不到联四，我的好老爺，辦不到撑教，我自己還不認(rèn)識(shí)他呢朝墩；你怎么可以這樣嘲笑人？”
"I honour your circumspection. A fortnight's acquaintance is certainly very little. One cannot know what a man really is by the end of a fortnight. But if we do not venture, somebody else will; and after all, Mrs. Long and her nieces must stand their chance; and therefore, as she will think it an act of kindness, if you decline the office, I will take it on myself."
“我真佩服你想得這般周到伟姐。兩個(gè)星期的認(rèn)識(shí)當(dāng)然談不上什么收苏。跟一個(gè)人相處了兩個(gè)星期，不可能就此了解他究竟是怎樣一個(gè)人愤兵。不過鹿霸，要是我們不去嘗試嘗試，別人可少不了要嘗試的秆乳。話說到底懦鼠，郎格太太和她的侄女一定不肯錯(cuò)過這個(gè)良機(jī)。因此屹堰，要是你不愿意辦這件事肛冶，我自己來辦好了，反正她會(huì)覺得這是我們對(duì)她的一片好意扯键∧佬洌”
The girls stared at their father. Mrs. Bennet said only, "Nonsense, nonsense!"
女兒們都對(duì)父親瞪著眼。班納特太太只隨口說了聲：“毫無意思荣刑！”
"What can be the meaning of that emphatic exclamation?" cried he. "Do you consider the forms of introduction, and the stress that is laid on them, as nonsense? I cannot quite agree with you there. What say you, Mary? for you are a young lady of deep reflection I know, and read great books, and make extracts."
“你怎么這樣大驚小怪馅笙！”他嚷道±骺鳎“你以為替人家效點(diǎn)兒勞介紹是毫無意思的事嗎董习？你這樣的說法我可不大同意。你說呢叶堆，曼麗阱飘？我知道你是個(gè)有獨(dú)到見解的少女，讀的書都是皇皇巨著虱颗，而且還要做札記沥匈。”
Mary wished to say something very sensible, but knew not how.
曼麗想說幾句有見識(shí)的話可又不知道怎么說才好忘渔。
"While Mary is adjusting her ideas," he continued, "let us return to Mr. Bingley."
于是班納特先生接下去說：“讓曼麗仔細(xì)想一想再發(fā)表意見吧高帖，我們還是重新來談?wù)劚蚋袢R先生∑枇福”
"I am sick of Mr. Bingley," cried his wife.
“我就討厭談彬格萊先生散址，”他的太太嚷起來了乖阵。
"I am sorry to hear that; but why did not you tell me so before? If I had known as much this morning, I certainly would not have called on him. It is very unlucky; but as I have actually paid the visit, we cannot escape the acquaintance now."
“遺憾得很，你竟會(huì)跟我說這種話预麸；你怎么不早說呢瞪浸？要是今天上午聽到你這樣說，那我當(dāng)然不會(huì)去拜訪他啦吏祸。這真叫不湊巧《云眩現(xiàn)在既然拜訪也拜訪過了，我們今后就少不了要結(jié)交這個(gè)朋友贡翘〉赴”
The astonishment of the ladies was just what he wished; that of Mrs. Bennet perhaps surpassing the rest; though when the first tumult of joy was over, she began to declare that it was what she had expected all the while.
果然不出他所料，娘兒們一聽此說鸣驱，一個(gè)個(gè)都大這驚異泛鸟，尤其是班納特太太，比誰都驚異得厲害踊东；不過北滥，這樣歡天喜地地喧嚷了一陣以后，她便當(dāng)眾宣布递胧，說這件事她早就料到的碑韵。
"How good it was in you, my dear Mr. Bennet! But I knew I should persuade you at last. I was sure you loved our girls too well to neglect such an acquaintance. Well, how pleased I am! and it is such a good joke, too, that you should have gone this morning, and never said a word about it till now."
“你真是個(gè)好心腸的人，我的好老爺缎脾！我早就知道你終究會(huì)給我說服的祝闻。你既然疼愛自己的女兒，當(dāng)然就不會(huì)把這樣一個(gè)朋友不放在心上遗菠。我真太高興了联喘！你這個(gè)玩笑開得真太有意思，誰想到你竟會(huì)今天上午去拜訪他辙纬，而且到現(xiàn)在一字不提豁遭。”
"Now, Kitty, you may cough as much as you chuse," said Mr. Bennet; and, as he spoke, he left the room, fatigued with the raptures of his wife.
“吉蒂贺拣，現(xiàn)在你可以放心大膽地咳嗽啦蓖谢，”班納特先生一面說，一面走出房間譬涡，原來他看到太太那樣得意忘形闪幽，不免覺得有些厭惡。
"What an excellent father you have, girls," said she, when the door was shut. "I do not know how you will ever make him amends for his kindness; or me either, for that matter. At our time of life, it is not so pleasant I can tell you, to be making new acquaintance every day; but for your sakes, we would do any thing. Lydia, my love, though you are the youngest, I dare say Mr. Bingley will dance with you at the next ball."
門一關(guān)上涡匀，班納特太太便對(duì)她的幾個(gè)女兒說“孩子們盯腌，你們的爸爸真太好了，我不知道你們?cè)鯓硬拍軋?bào)答他的恩典陨瘩；再說腕够，你們還應(yīng)該好好報(bào)答我一番呢级乍。老實(shí)跟你們說吧，我們老夫妻活到這么一把年紀(jì)了帚湘，哪兒有興致天天去交朋結(jié)友玫荣；可是為了你們，我們隨便什么事都樂意去做大诸。麗迪雅崇决，乖寶貝，雖然你年紀(jì)最小底挫，開起跳舞會(huì)來，彬格萊先生或許就偏偏要跟你跳呢脸侥〗ǖ耍”
"Oh!" said Lydia stoutly, "I am not afraid; for though I am the youngest, I'm the tallest."
“噢！”麗迪雅滿不在乎地說睁枕」俦撸“我才不當(dāng)它一回事。年紀(jì)雖然是我最小外遇，個(gè)兒算我頂高注簿。”
The rest of the evening was spent in conjecturing how soon he would return Mr. Bennet's visit, and determining when they should ask him to dinner.
于是她們一方面猜測(cè)那位貴人什么時(shí)候會(huì)來回拜班納特先生跳仿，一方面盤算著什么時(shí)候請(qǐng)他來吃飯诡渴，就這樣把一個(gè)晚上的工夫在閑談中度過去了。
