1. Why do people like things?

Fransic: Why do you people like things? Let's see. English people like animals. Some people like dogs, because they're friendly. Some people like cats, because they're quiet. Some people like parrots, because they talk.
Parrot: Hollow.
Francis: Why do you like dogs?
Man: Because they're friendly.
Woman: I don't like dogs. I prefer cats.
Francis: Why do you prefer cats?
Woman: Because they are quiet. They don't make much niose.
Francis: Why do you like parrots?
Woman: Because they talk.
Francis: That parrot doesn't talk.
Parrot: Yes, I do.

弗朗西斯：人們?yōu)槭裁聪矚g某些東西呢篷就？我們來看看射亏。英國人喜歡動物。有的喜歡狗竭业，因為狗很友好智润。有的人喜歡貓，因為貓安靜未辆。有的喜歡鸚鵡窟绷，因為鸚鵡會說話。

注1. why 是疑問副詞辐怕，詢問理由時用逼蒙。可以用 why 引出一個問句寄疏，也可以單獨使用其做，說 Why? 回答用 because …
—Why don't you like that coat? Because it's expensive, and it isn't long enough.
—I don't like these new shoes. Why? Because they are too small.
—Why do you like me? Because you give me presents.
注2. Let's see. 意思是“讓我們想想×藁梗”當(dāng)另人問你問題妖泄，你需要考慮時，可以說 Let's me see. 意思是“讓我考慮一下艘策〉负”
注3. much 和 many 都是“許多” 的意思，但用法不同朋蔫，much 用于不可數(shù)名詞罚渐，many 用于可數(shù)名詞。如：
much noise; much time; much money; etc.
many peoples; many days; many things; etc.
注4. to make noise 意思是驯妄，發(fā)出吵鬧聲荷并。He always makes a noise at night. （他晚上老發(fā)出吵鬧聲。）

2. Here's a lamp which looks nice.

一對年輕夫婦到商店去買臺燈青扔。
Husband: This one. Let's buy this lamp.
Wife: No. It's too big. This one's better.
Husband: No. Not that one, please.
Wife: Why not?
Husband: My mother won't like it.
Wife: But, it's not for your mother. It's for us. And I like it.
Husband: What about this one?
Wife: No, I don't like it at all. I don't like the colour. I prefer that one. What do you think of it?
Huband: Oh, no!
Wife: Why don't you like that one.
Husband: Because it's too big and too expensive. We can't buy a lamp which costs ￡55.
Shopkeeper：Can I help me?
Husband: Yes. Would you show us lamp? One which is not too big and which isn't expensive and which looks nice.
Ahopkeeper: This one looks nice. Here's a lamp which looks nice. And here's one which isn't expensive.

丈夫：這一盞源织。我們買這盞燈吧。
妻子：不微猖，那盞太大了谈息。這一盞好些。
丈夫：不凛剥，不要那盞侠仇。
妻子：為什么不要？
丈夫：我母親不喜歡犁珠。
妻子：這又不是給你母親買的逻炊。這是給我們買的。我喜歡這盞燈犁享。
丈夫：這盞怎么樣余素？
妻子：不好，我一點也不喜歡這盞饼疙。我不喜歡這個顏色溺森。我喜歡那一盞慕爬。你覺得怎么樣窑眯？
丈夫：喔磅甩，不好！
妻子：你為什么不喜歡那一盞？
丈夫：因為它太大而且太貴，我們不能花五十五鎊買盞燈。
店員：我能幫你的忙嗎？
丈夫：是的远舅。請給我們看一盞燈爆办，好嗎暮刃？要一盞不太大，又不太貴坏瘩，而又好看的燈柱锹。
店員：這盞看來不錯。這是一盞好看的燈。這是一盞不貴的燈。

注5. 第八課出現(xiàn)過 which, 那是疑問詞灵汪，意思是“那個”。如：
Coffee or tea, which do you prefer?
本課出現(xiàn)的 which 是關(guān)系代詞，用在復(fù)合句中偏化，連接主語與定語從句驶冒。如：
We want to buy a lamp which is not too expensive. （我們想買一盞不太貴的燈苟翻。）這名話可以折成兩句：We want to buy a lamp.
The lamp is not too expensive.
用 which 代替第二名的“the lamp”，然后把兩句子連成一個骗污，這就構(gòu)成一個復(fù)合句崇猫。which 引導(dǎo)的是一個定語從句，修飾主語的賓語 lamp身堡，說明這盞燈不是任何一盞燈邓尤，而是特定的燈——“不太貴的燈”拍鲤。
例如：
We prefer the room which has a shower.（我們喜歡帶淋浴的房間贴谎。）
I like the room which faces the sea. （我喜歡朝海的那個房間。）
I don't like coats which have belts.（我不喜歡有腰帶的外衣季稳。）
注6. to show sb. sth. 意思是“給某人看某物”擅这。如：
Show me the red coat over there, please.
Show me those shoes, please.

3. There lamps are different.

年輕夫婦新買的燈不亮了，于是他們又去商店換燈景鼠。
Wife: May we have another lamps?
Shopkeeper: Yes, of course, madam. But why?
Wife: Because this one doesn't work.
Husband: Would you please us one which works?
Shopkeeper: Certainly, sir. Just a moment, please. Here you are.
Wife: That's not the same. It's smaller than this one.
Shopkeeper: You are right. It isn't the same. It's different. It's a different size.
Husband: This one's a different colour.
Shopkeeper: Same size - different colour…
Hasband: May we have one which is the same size and the same colour?
Shopkeeper: This is the right one. These lamps are the same. These lamps are different. Here you are. This one will work.

妻子：我們要換另一盞燈仲翎。
店員：當(dāng)然可以。夫人铛漓，不過為什么呢溯香？
妻子：因為這個不靈。
丈夫：請給我們一盞沒毛病的燈浓恶。
店員：當(dāng)然啰玫坛，先生。請等一下包晰。給你湿镀。

店員：大小一樣胸嘴，顏色不同……
丈夫：我們要一盞大小一樣雏掠，顏色也一樣的燈，可以嗎筛谚？
店員：這盞就對了磁玉。這兩盞燈一樣。這兩盞燈不一樣驾讲。給您蚊伞。這一盞沒在毛病席赂。

注7. This one dosen't work. 這里“ work ” 的意思是能用，don't work 的意思是“有毛病”时迫、“不能用”颅停。如：
The wacth works well. （這表走得很好。）
The telephone isn't working. （電話壞了掠拳。）
注8. the came 的意思是“相同的”癞揉。如：
These shoes are the same.
There houses are the same colour.
They study are the same college.
same 的反意詞是 different. 如：
These lamps are different.*

1. 電視節(jié)目中有一段情景是一對夫婦去旅館訂房間。請說出：
   (1) 他們要的是單人間（single room）還是雙人間（double room）溺欧？
   (2) 他們要帶淋浴還要帶澡盆的房間犁柜？
   (3) 那位女客人說了什么要求？接待員是怎么回答的大审？
   Man: That's not too expensive. What's it made of?
   Salesman: It's made ot wool. Is it big enough for your father?

(1) 說明或詢問為什么喜歡或不喜歡：
Why do you like (prefer) gogs?
Because they're friendly.
(2) 說明所指東西大小梆靖、價格控汉、材料和外表等等：
I want a coat which isn't too small.
I want a coat which isn'e too expesive.
I want a coat which is made of wool.
I want a coat which looks nice.
(3) 說明東西相同或不同：
It's the same. It's different.
It's the same size, but a different colour.

2. 語法

(1) many 和 much
many 用于可數(shù)名詞，如：many books
How many books do you have?
much 用于不可數(shù)名詞返吻，如：much money
How much money do they cost?
(2) 復(fù)合句姑子，由一個主句和一個以上的從句構(gòu)成。主句為句子的主體测僵，從句是主句的一個部分街佑，從句由關(guān)系代詞或關(guān)系副詞引導(dǎo)并與主句相連。
以關(guān)系代詞 which 引導(dǎo)的從句捍靠，修飾主句的名詞沐旨，叫定語從句，如：
I prefer a quite village which is near the sea.
